So my dad wants to throw us an engagement party but none of us really know when to do it. We just got engaged (oct.15th) and I'm not sure how long to wait to have one. We are hoping to get married the end of 2012 or the beginning of 2013. I don't want my dad to spend too much money on this so I was wondering if it's ok to wait until the summer and have a bbq or maybe just have sunday brunch at a restaurant. How long between the time you got engaged to when you had your party?

Re: Engagement Party help
For me it was two months. I would make sure that your wedding and engagement party are far apart to give your guests a break.

Re: Engagement Party help
We had our engagement party 7 months after we got engaged. But between when we got engaged and the wedding it is 28 months. I would say make sure you have at least 6 months between the parties.

Re: Engagement Party help
We got engaged in April and had our engagement party in July. We are getting married next July, exactly a year after the party.

Re: Engagement Party help
We didnt have an engagement pary for this reason. We had a short engagment, 10 months. it was near the holidays and by the time we would be able to do a e-party we thought it was too soon to the wedding (like 8months). I would say the summer would be fine if you plan of getting married at the end of 2012 or beg. of 2013, that is plenty of time.

Re: Engagement Party help
We got engaged in July of 2010 and then had our engagement party of November of 2010. You definitely don't want to have it too close to the wedding.

Re: Engagement Party help
i had the same question and some wedding etiquette site i found back then said something like generally within three months of the engagement...obviously that doesn't mean it has to though

Re: Engagement Party help
We also just got engaged (Oct 1st) and are having our party probably in January/February. We wanted to wait till we had an offical wedding date to make sure there would be enough time in between. We were originally planning on a November 2012 wedding but because of the limited availability at the places we visited we ended up with March 2013. This gives us over a year between the e-party and wedding which we're happy with! We dont want to overwhelm the family with wedding related parties!

This is like us exactly. We are going Tuesday to see what is available. Looking for Nov 2012 but if there's nothing then we'll go with March 2013. We figured we would wait until Jan. for an engagement party since we wanted to wait until after the holidays. I would just much rather have a nice simple BBQ but everyone I've mentioned that to said that the summer is very far away and it wouldn't make sense to wait that long. Hopefully I can help my dad find a restaurant that isn't too expensive. Thanks for the advice

Im the same way! I would take an informal backyard BBQ anyday! I love having an endless amount of time and just being able to hang out with friends/family. Good luck on the search! The places we visited all tended to have one random day left in November 2012. We found March was about $10 cheaper pp on a saturday night than a friday in november! If you have any questions let me know!

Re: Engagement Party help
Got engaged in March 2011 and had the e party in May. Wedding is in March 2012.
We had ours at Sergio's in Massapequa. You can't beat the price. Sunday afternoon is the most reasonable. It's not brunch, but more like an early dinner. Ours was Saturday night and the price pp was unbeatable. I went to about 10 different places. We also had a party there a few years back so we knew it would be good.
