Engagement Party - Is/Has everyone having/had one?

Me and FH decided that we aren't gonna have one. It just seems like another expense and we figured the shower and wedding would be enough (plus bachelor/bachelorrette parties). But everyone keeps asking us when we are having ours! Is it abnormal to not have one? Is anyone else opting out?

I have not had one since I feel the same way about the expenses. I also feel it's like asking for gifts 3 times (jmo). Other people I know have had one though they had not even set a date!

So I would think do whatever your comfortable with, I don't think it's abnormal if you don't want to. Or you could have a small party with a limited # of people.

Some people do and some don't. We didn't send out engagement announcements since we knew we would have one. We got engaged 9/3/04 and we just picked out eparty date 6/18/05. The FH's parents are throwing it. It's going to be simple and at a hall. The main reason we are having one is because we are getting married in NY and his family is from Boston. We are having the eparty up there so those that can't come to the wedding due to distance, old age, health, etc can still celebrate with us.

FH & I decided not to have one bc it was another expense that we needed to pay for...With paying for the wedding & trying to purchase a home, we didn't want to use the extra money for another party...Plus I would rather spend the $$ on the wedding

we are doing a very informal enagement barbecue. Nothing fancy, just some burgers and dogs! We always bbq so we figured this would be an inexpensive way to celebrate. Normally we cram 50 people into the yard, so we are going to have a small party.

We are having one this weekend! I am very excited.

But I have heard mean comments about a party 'just to get money' and actually, we will be putting more OUT than getting in - most of our invited guests have already given us presents.

But our families don't know eachother well and I don't want them to first meet at my shower or wedding. I want them to feel like they know eachother. Plus we never really celebrated....

But you are right, it IS an expense and unless someone is paying for it for you, you lose out.

We are having one- I didn't really want one, but my mom really wanted to do it, she said its a tradition in her family, so we're having it in April. Besides, it will be a good time for my parents to meet FH's parents.

I had one...and it was the best thing I could of done. First I knew that we were going to have a long engagement. Plus, we wanted a reason to celebrate.
We got engaged in Feb 04 and had party in July 04. My parents gave us the party and it was a lot of fun and well, everyone was very generous that we got a nice head start on our wedding fund.
We didnt expect that or figured our families would be so generous. It was nice and Im happy we had our e-party.

Hi - this does NOT have to be a big expense.
I have my e-party at my home. Family & friends cooked. When everyone does a little bit - its not a chore. We had SO MUCH FOOD -it was fantastic. i had 40+people over.

So this just a thought...

We arent going to have one. the people who want to wish us well will wish us well regardless. Being a wedding guest - especially a FEMALE wedding guest can be costly with a wedding, shower AND engagement gift not to mention the clothing one has to wear. I don't want one an engagement party.

I agree. This is why we are having a bbq. Not necessarily for the money, but to celebrate. I love the idea of grilling up food. I think we will also have some catered salads and stuff and I am sure that our families will bring food. So it doesn't have to be too expensive. I am planning on using the flowers that grow in my yard as my CPs.

We decided not to have one because it will be another expense for us right now. We just sent out announcements and registered.

We had one back in September 03 (wow that seems so long ago). We knew we would be having a very long engagement and since my family looks for any excuse to party my parents hosted one for us. It was VERY low key, but that's all we would have wanted. It was basically a backyard BBQ with our families and the BP. It was a lot of fun and good way to introduce everyone in the bridal party. Our families had already met many times before that. I think its your choice to have one and everyone's situation is different. I actually had never heard of engagement parties until LIW!

We never really wanted one. It's was just an added expense to us and our guests. JMO.

We are having one. Some people do and some don't. We really want to and my Mom was willing to throw it for us. We are having it at a local Knights of Columbus. It should be nice...we are looking forward to it.

We are having an official 'Meet the Family' at my FH parents' house this summer. It'll include Aunts/Uncles, grandparents, & first cousins in addtion to our immediate familes.

Now my mom wants us to invite the bridal party. If you read my last post about bp size, I have #25...so this may end up being a big party.

The key factor is our parents are throwing it so it won't cost us any money out of our wedding fund. If that was the case, I probably would have passed on the idea.

We are having it 7/9/05 & our wedding isn't until 7/14/06...FOREVER & EVER AWAY

We had one on 10/17/03...it feels like it was so long ago!

It was huge...we invited 209ppl and had 155 attend. HUGE...but everyone was so generous and our gifts helped us start plannig the wedding.

Good luck!
