My mom previously said she hates the idea of engagement parties because it is an excuse to receive gifts. Now she wants to throw one for my FH and I since his family does not live on LI and she has not met anyone besides his immediate fam. Who else typically gets invited to engagement parties? Most brides I know had an engagement party and invited guests in the area, just not out of town guests. But I'm stumped- what is the right thing to do??

Re: Engagement Party- just family?? or friends?
You can do whatever you want...however I agree with your mom that some e-parties turn into mini-weddings and its a lot to ask of people to bring a gift to that, then the shower, then the wedding.
I would keep it to just immediate family and the bridal party. Maybe include aunts/uncles if that won't make the guest list too huge.

Re: Engagement Party- just family?? or friends?
We had a full out bash with college friends and local friends, family, parents friends. It was in my backyard and low key but amazing. Except Hannah hit on Sat and it got moved to Sunday, so the all night bash we had planned with our college friends got cancelled and a lot of OOTers cancelled on us.

Mine was 50 people. It was our parents, BP (plus dates), some of FH's aunts and uncles and cousins (he's very close with his extended family), some of our parents closest friends, and a few of our friends who are not in the BP but we are extremely close with.
We didn't have any OOT guests.

its your personal choice, but for mine we just had immediate family and aunts, uncles, cousins. It ended up around 55 people.

We invited both family and friends. In total we had about 55-60 people had our bash. We did it on the fourth of July and every one had a blast. We even had fire works which was really fun.

mine was 60-70 people and was held at FIL's house. we kept it to close family because it was a lot of people to begin with.

we both have really big families so we just limited it to the immediate family and the bridal party/dates... that alone was 60 people... you have to just know when to cut down because then it will turn into a mini-wedding

Re: Engagement Party- just family?? or friends?
we had all the local family.. and friends.
but we DID send invites to the out of state people because we felt it would be rude not too even give them the option of coming.
The only people who traveled more than 2 hours were some of my friends from college - upstate who came.
We ended up with about 100 people.

i think you can really do what you want to do...that there is no right thing necessarily. For us, it was just my family and a few fam friends...unfortunately FH's fam is out of state so they couldn't come.
