My mother has set a $40-45 pp cap for my engagement party. I wanted to have about 100 people, but I can't find anywhere (nice) that is this cheap (in Manhattan, pref)! I don't have anyone with a house in the area, so I can't go that route. Any ideas??

Re: ENGAGEMENT PARTY LOCALE?? help!
what kind of engagement party did you have in mind? if you want a sit-down type of dinner, i think that might be close to impossible to find in manhattan, especially if you'd like to include alcohol... how about a cocktail type of party, with hors-d'oeuvres and drinks? you could rent out a cute lounge or something... can't think of any particular ones off the top of my head right now, but i'm thinking that might be more doable for the price.

Hmm I used to do event planning in Manhattan and I don't think you will find anywhere that cheap including alcohol. And if you did, it would probably be a dive....Without alcohol it might be possible...
ETA: I don't think you'll get a fancy place for that price, but you could try chains like the Hard Rock Cafe or America...

My rehearsal dinner is going to be at City Cafe and that is $31 pp, plus a bar tab.
They have live music 5-6 nights a week!

Giving my engagement party in Long Island but I am doing a brunch . . . maybe that will work out less per head? It is definitely more casual that a sit-down dinner but has it perks also . . .
A mimosa, bloody mary or champagne drink is usually included as are most sodas, juices, etc.
I believe Central Park has a a cafe that does brunch. Or do a search for NYC brunches. http://www.digitalcity.com/newyork/bestbrunch
Brunches of course do limit you to a Sunday am e-party.
