engagement party question......

engagement party question......

I was wondering if you register for your engagement party, I heard that you are absolutely not supposed to. I hate to even ask this because the whole registry thing really makes me uncomfortable. I hate the idea of picking out my own gifts and being like 'here is the gift list, pick one and buy it for me!!!!' (but I have a feeling that I will get over that real quick!!!!

Re: engagement party question......

I'm planning on being registered when my e-party invites go out. If my guests chooses to buy me gifts from it, all the better. IMO, it makes it easier on the guests to know what we want. They dont have to buy something of the registry but if they're going to buy you a gift anyway, why shouldn't it be somethig you want?

I didnt have an E party, but everyone I know registered before it. even though most the time you get $$ to help you out with the wedding.

We didn't register for our e-party. Many people register as soon as they get engaged, and that's fine, it just wasn't for us. We still haven't registered. If you do register, I wouldn't include anything about your registry, let people find out by word of mouth, since there's no rule that you even have to get a gift for your e-party.

I did the same and I agree.

I totally understand how you feel about the registering thing, but honestly its a good thing to do. I also would agree that for an engagement party its best to let it get around by word of mouth(though if you set up a website you could put something in your invite about it & on the site offer registry info, which I think is less tacky ). We didn't register for our engagement party because it never dawned on us & looking back I wish we had. First, NOONE gave us money at our engagement party(I didn't even know that people did that really) & second DH & I have been together for quite awhile before we got married so we had a lot of stuff already(even at the time of our engagement) & some people just don't know what to give(if I remember correctly we got 6 or 7 sets of wine glasses ). And trust me if someone doesn't want to buy you something off your registry they won't.

I registered, but didn't announce it. I told close family members and they would tell people only if the question was posed. I did not send out registry cards with the invites or anything that would be 'asking' for people to buy from my registry.

I didn't have an engagement party but I registered and I received over half of my registry. If you don't register then you don't get what you want!

I am in the same boat. My bf told me to register before it so I think we are going to. She was recently engaged also and registered prior to her e party and was happy because although you don't ever want anyone to feel required to purchase a gift for an e party, they probably will and at least with a list it can help them and you! (so you don't end up with a bunch of the same things...or things you don't want/need). We are going to register for a few things...but leave the bigger stuff to add on later on...before the bridal shower etc. hope this helps!

Re: engagement party question......

I'd register when you feel comfortable. Some people don't want to give $$ so will want to give gifts and honestly it just takes the pressure off of your guests. It's really for them more than for you. it keeps you form getting tacky stuff, but think about how much of a relief it is to the guest who knows s/he's buying you something you'll absolutely love!

I'm only having a small eparty (less than 20 people) we can't afford much more than that, and we already started our registries We're not finished. We've received 5 gifts so far. 2 were money (always good), one was a set of glasses to match our china (which we didn't know existed..my parents found it on sale and bought it!) and one was a crystal decanter set, which we didn't register for, but we like a lot anyway. My parents also had a lenox 'minnie's dream wedding' waiting for me when i came back from disney world engaged! I've been lucky so far, but my sister took awhile to get registered and she got a lot of stuff that was really nice, but just doens't match her decor or taste. It's not tacky to register. Just tell your mom and FH's mom and believe me people will ASK them and they'll spread the word. it's less embarrassing in the end because if someone gives you a platter they think is great, that doens't match your planned decor at all, when they come over, they're going to look for that platter. You either have to be dishonest and use it when that person comes over (so it's almost entirely useless) or return it, and make them feel bad. So it's better to preclude that and ahve them buy you a platter you're going to love and use everyday!

Re: engagement party question......

Someone else was looking for the same answer...so at least you know we are all in the same boat.

My engagement party was very small with close family members. I registered for a few things because my mom said family members were asking her for gift suggestions and if we registered. My suggestion would be to register for a few nice things...nothing too expensive. Have a range of things so people aren't forced to choose something expensive. For example, vases, picture frames, that sort of thing. You might want to pick your glassware and/or china. Don't advertise it, but if anyone asks if you have registered or what to get you, you/your family members can say you have started your registry. It's hard to not feel like 'here's my list, go buy me stuff' but it's become so normal that people expect it.

We registered prior to our e-party but didn't 'advertise'. Those who bought us things from our registry found out through word of mouth (and I'm glad they did), we got beautiful gifts including some of our china.
