Engagement Party Questions

Hey Everyone! I just hot engaged last week in Vegas and it has been so great, but I can't believe how many questions everybody starts to ask the second you are engaged. Anyway, We are not sure if we want to have an Engagement party or not. Does anyone have any advice?

If we do have one, how long should we wait to have it? Who gets invited to an engagement party?

Thanks!

Re: Engagement Party Questions

We skipped on having one. If we did have one it would of been close very close family at a house bbq setup. more laid back not a mini wedding.

I have heard anytime up to a year prior to your marriage but i have seen people push it to 9 months before the date. Any sooner i think your being greedy (my opinion).

Its a nice formal announcement of the engagement and traditionally its held for both families to get to know each other and only close/childhood friends. Don't go overboard - you may get family to resent you for giving at an engagement party, then wedding shower then wedding especially now with the economy.

Re: Engagement Party Questions

Orignially I did NOT want to have one, but my parents kind of insisted because they threw one for my sister (I guess they don't want me to feel like it is unbalanced). I agreed to have one because our wedding is not until Oct 2010. I feel (and what I've read about) it is appropriate to have one within 3 months of your engagement. We are only inviting close family members on both sides to a small dinner (about 22 people). It is next weekend and I am getting exciting about it.

Re: Engagement Party Questions

We were thinking of skipping it but then thought that since our families have never met it might be a good opportunity for them to do so. We haven't pick a date yet but love the month of October and most likely we will get married in October 2010. I know it's a long engagement but we need time to pay off some bills and save money.

With that being the case, should we have an engagement party in the next few months or wait?

We are probably doing October 2010 too! Since you are having a small dinner type thing did you send out invitations?

Re: Engagement Party Questions

We didn't decide to have one, b/c since we booked our wedding right away- it was too much to ask from people and we couldnt afford to have an engagement party and pay for everything that goes along with a wedding in a time span of 12 months lol..... If you can afford an engagement party right now, you do it normally within 2 months to announce your engagement. I would invite family, friends, and people who you would invite to your wedding. If they are going to your engagment party, then they should also be invited to your wedding.

If we do it within 2 months we go into holiday season. Is it bad to have an engagement party in December? How far in advance do I send out invitations for the engagement party?

Re: Engagement Party Questions

Congrats on your engagement!

We got engaged in August. We are having our eparty December 7. We waited a while because we wanted to have all of our plans ready, so that when we do see everyone, we will have answers!
We are only inviting our bridal party and family.

We would have had it sooner, but FH works a lot and this is the first weekend that is conveinent.

My FMIL threw an intimate engagement party at her home. About 40 people. Immediate family, close family friends. Because it was intimate, we didn't do formal invites. Our parents invited everyone.

It was the first time our families met and it was fantastic . We were engaged in Europe on 9/1, returned home 9/14 booked our reception hall 9/21....our e-party was 9/27..,it all happened very fast. lol

we got engaged July 27 and we had a very small engagement party....just family and a handful of close friends. it was in my aunts backyard and it was a lot of fun. it's totally up to you what you want to do

Re: Engagement Party Questions

we had one 3 months after we got engaged. it was about 90 people. we invited friends and mostly immediate family. we drew the line on certain family members otherwise it would have been a mini wedding (it was already 90 people).

it was nice to have everyone together to celebrate your engagement. it was like a preview to the wedding.

make sure the people you invite you are close to because technically if they were invited to the e-party they should be invited to the wedding

Re: Engagement Party Questions

We had one. 3 months after we got engaged. It was awesome & so happy we did. FH & I have a large family so we kept it to that. We invited 100 (because our fam's is so large). We got 80 people in total. We did formal invites & We had it at Villa Umberto's the room fit up to 100 so we had 8 tables of 10. We had a DJ and favors & we did the CP's. Our menu consisted of passed hor'devours & champagne when people walked in then hot antipasta. Like Baked clams, calamari, fried cappellini and shrimp oreganta. Then salad then a choice of 4 entrees. We had our engagement cake & chocolates, mini vienese trays & cordials. Espresso cappuccino, tea etc. Also full open top shelf bar. It was an awesome party.

You can invite who feel closest to or just family or both fam & friends. Its all up to you & what your budget may be. You may want to keep it simple or go crazy . Its all in whatyou want. I would start with finding teh location . if you want to do it home then work from there. Food, entertainment etc.

Re: Engagement Party Questions

Congratulations!

I didn't want one at first....but then I realized how many people who were important to me hadn't met my FH! So instead of an Eparty we had a 'Meet Dave' party. It was at my mom's house -- very informal -- homecooked food for 40 people. It was the first time our extended families really got to meet each other as well. And it was AWESOME. I highly recommed it. The high you are feeling right now....i guarantee you will feel that way at your party. :)

HAVE FUN!!!!
