What is usually done at an engagement party? announcements? first dance? speeches or toasts etc. I am having it at a catering hall so it is pretty formal. What should be done?

At our engagement party, we did not have a DJ so there were no dances or anything. My mom give a short 'thank you to everyone for coming' toast. Our catering hall included a cake, so we took pics with the cake (Mom forced us to a la wedding photo, totally embarassing) and then FH and I made a toast to thank my parents for the beautiful party. Actually, when the time came for the thank you toast, FH was standing mute next to me as I thanked my parents and FILs for coming (as he is not comfortable speaking in public). Since I am the big talker anyway, no one was surprised

Your father should give a toast and then your FH should respond to it. No other rituals. I would not doing a ton of 'wedding-like' stuff at an e-party. You want to save that for the wedding.
