Engagement Party - would you want this?

I know this will probably sound selfish but - my parents want to throw us an engagement party (mind you we have been engaged for more than 6 months now.)
They want to throw the engagement party the weekend of my graduation from law school. I told them I don't think this would be an ideal time and could we possibly have it either earlier or later? They told me I'm being selfish and spoiled and that was when they wanted to do it because it was more convienent for them since I won't be having a graduation party.
They claim they are also doing this since FH will be home at that time (he will come home sat and will leave monday - my graduation is all day sunday at Lincoln Center.) FH will be home for 2 weeks in April - which is when I suggested that we have the party or he will be home again in August for 2 weeks and we could do it then. This is going to be a small maybe only 30 person party at my parent's house since they don't want to be bothered going out.

I don't think you are being selfish. Both events - your engagement and graduation - are big lifetime milestones that I think should be celebrated seperately.

I agree, graduating from Law School is no small feat! Congrats on that! If it is going to be a small affair, is it possible for you to hold it somewhere else at another time that is more convienient?

Re: Engagement Party - would you want this?

I would NOT combine effects. You deserve to celebrate your accomplishment without throwing the wedding into the mix.
I would tell them that while you apprecaite their gesture you really just want to graduate and not worry about an e-party the same weekend. You worked VERY hard to earn that degree- enjoy your moment.

Re: Engagement Party - would you want this?

First of all CONGRATULATIONS!!! You are absolutely NOT being selfish, both graduating from law school and getting engaged are two huge events and should be honored and celebrated individually.
Print this thread out and show it to your family!!

Congrtaulations on Graduating Law School! You deserve to have that day dedicated to that accomplishment.
You are not being selfish and should, by all means, have your EP when it is convenient to you and FH!!!!

Congrats on your graduation. No I don't think you are being selfish. Mom's are tough..I agree print the thread. Hopefully Mom won't get upset and you can both come to an agreement. Put some of that law school debating into effect. LOL
