I want to have an engagement party. My mother is willing to plan one, and alot of my side of the family and friends will attend. I have been engaged for a year now, and am getting married in 16 mons. I have been told that having an engagement party and a shower and the wedding...its too many gifts that people are going to have to keep shelling out to me and my FH. Do a lot of people feel this way? I never thought that engagement parties were in poor taste!!! Has anyone else had one...do ppl bring gifts? PLEASE HELP!

Re: Engagement party..HELP!!!!
yeah, you could do that...or u can say on the invatations 'no gifts please' or something to that respect. EVen if ppl. gave gifts they do not have to spend a lot of money. Maybe u can do like a wishing well sort of thing, i dont know if anyone ever does this for e parties but they are usually smaller gifts. It's not like u are having the party for the gifts...it's to celebrate your engagement. i think if u want one u should have it and not worry about how close it is to the wedding...it is still pretty far apart!

I don't think it's too much because your wedding is 16 months away. If you do want an e-party though, have one soon so it doesn't become so close to the shower and wedding!

I wouldn't stress about it. You're leaving enough time between the engagement party and the wedding. My family and FH's family both threw us engagement parties, and each time he and I told our immediate families that gifts were not required or expected. They spread the word to the rest of our guests since they were the hosts.
