Are you getting your ring cleaned for your wedding? How much time should you allow for it? Also, I need to get my ring sized--it's a little too big for my finger, well it always has been, and I kept putting off getting it fitted for my finger. Do you know how long it would take for that? I'm assuming that they would put a guard on it. Thanks!

Re: Engagement Ring Cleaning
I get my ring cleaned every few months... this way the jewler can also check to make sure the diamond is completely secure... plus I love the way it sparkles after its cleaned... I am not sure about the sizing, but I am guessing it can't take too long... call your jewler up and ask...

Re: Engagement Ring Cleaning
They actually had to size mine down (I didn't really want the guards, and it had to be sized down to a 3 from a 3.5). It took about an hour, and they did it while we waited. I think I will probably bring it in for cleaning beforehand...

Re: Engagement Ring Cleaning
I also got mine a size bigger...it took 10 minutes at a booth in South Shore Mall. I wouldn't leave it alone so I waited and watched!

Re: Engagement Ring Cleaning
I am planning to get my ring cleaned before the wedding. I'm using Elsa Jewelers since they are also designing our wedding bands.
Here's a cleaning tip for everyday:
Take an old toothbrush with toothpaste and hot water and scrub your ring. It cleans and shines it up great. And it takes 2 seconds while you brush your teeth!

Thank you everyone for your advice and suggestions. I actually need to find a jeweler--my ring is an antique and I don't know when it was last in the hands of a jeweler.

Re: Engagement Ring Cleaning
I clean mine once a week with the gem and jewlery cleaner my jewler gave me...just a jar with a teeny brush....sparkles like crazy after.... i'll do a full cleaning b4 the wedding.
my ring was too big...so they put those 2 teeny balls on the bottom of the ring so it grips my finger...u don't notice and it took 5 minutes!

Re: Engagement Ring Cleaning
I clean mine once a week with Tiffany jewelry cleaner - it's AMAZING. If it's platinum, be careful about getting it professionally cleaned too often - you won't have a band left. The machine they use wears away at the band.
As far as getting it sized, I got mine sized down also and they did it while I waited. I wouldn't ever leave it with a jeweler, especially if you don't already have one, because apparently diamond switching is fairly commonplace. If they're not willing to do it in front of you while you wait I'd find someone else.

same here...this way, when i get pregnant, they don't have to cut the metal and go back and forth.
soar in white vinegar for about 10 mins. Brush with nail brush or toothbrush rinse again with white vinegar then water and wear ...
It really sparkles!

Re: Engagement Ring Cleaning
I also use the toothpaste & toothbrush trick. My very wise MOH (better known to you as 'aimerliny') taught me this -- works great!
In a pinch, I let the tap run on hot for a minute and stick my ring under reallly hot tap water.
I LOVE cleaning my ring. Who knew cleaning anything could be this much fun?!

Re: Engagement Ring Cleaning
I clean my ring at least once every 2 weeks at a jeweler by steam cleaning, and I also have a jewelry cleaner I bought at Littman jewelers, they told me I could use it every day if I wanted to.

Re: Engagement Ring Cleaning
Good ol' handsoap and toothbrush for me. Works so well that people ALWAYS comment on how sparkly my ring is whenever I clean it. But I make sure to get it steam cleaned every now and then so that it doesn't get a film from the soap. You know, just incase, since I'm anal.

Re: Engagement Ring Cleaning
I haven't tried this, but a friend of mine cleans her ring with Efferdent. Yup...the denture cleaner! She disolves the tablet in a cup of water and drops the ring in for a few minutes...viola...sparkly diamond!!!
Speaking of getting rings sized...I had THE SCARIEST moment today. I was sitting at my desk at work when I looked down at my hand and my ring was GONE. I nearly had a heart attack. I was panicked inside, but I tried to remain calm and think where it could be. I realized the last place I had been was the restroom. Thank goodness I used my boss's private facilities, the ring was in the paper towel I had dried my hands with!!!!! It slipped right off my finger!
Needless to say...I'm getting my ring sized this weekend. That was enough to scare the crap out of me. Can you imagine if I didn't notice until later in the day...the cleaning crew would have taken the garbage out and I would have been devastated.
I was thanking God the rest of day!

I had the balls put in the back of mine too! They are great. Keeps my ring from turning - especially handy while I type at work all day and on LIW at night.
