My FH and I got engaged on Aug 21st. The 1st dilema was that the ring was a size too big... no big deal, it happens. I parted with it the following week and got it sized, the right size. Not even a week later I noticed that the diamond was loose, sliding back and forth. We gave it back to the jeweler. After a week, I got it back and about a week later I noticed that it was loose, AGAIN (I heard it rattling). Again, I had to part with my ring. They were sending it back to the designer to have the setting re-done. About 2 weeks went by and I finally got it back today. To my inspection, I noticed that one of the sapphires on the side was scratched. So disappointing I can't even begin to tell you. I went right back to the jewlery store (it's across the street from where I work) and showed it to them. Yes, it indeed was scratched in the process of putting the diamond back in. I was told to take it, wear it, enjoy it. It will be fixed after they return from the Jewish Holidays. Ok, no problem I can deal with a little scratch for the week.
Upon getting it home... I shook it to my ear, because now I have become paranoid that it's loose since it's happened 2x already. IT'S RATTLING AGAIN!!!!
This ring comes from an extremely reputable jeweler, they are infact friends of my FH and I. It's not like it was from some cheap shop. My FH paid a lot of money for it. I just don't know what to do at this point and neither does my FH. I am so disappointed and sad. I have not had my enagement ring on my finger a full week since getting engaged!
Has ANYONE encountered such probelms with their ring? The setting just not being right? I just can't conceive of this continually happening, especially since they completely redid the middle part that holds the diamond.
I'm in desperate need of reassurance.

Re: Engagement ring horror
I know it must be VERY annoying, but try to take it as a grain of salt. You have your FH and he is a diamond enough. Try to relax. Put the ring in a box until the holiday is over and if you really need a ring buy a temp CZ to wear until your ring is ready. Give the guy one more time to do right, if he messes up again (which I hope you aren't paying for.) Take it to someone else. Also have your FH put insurances on the ring. Just in case. Feel better okay.

Yes I have been through the same thing.... In fact I had my ring sized from an 8 to a 5 then stones were loose got those fixed then went back and it was loose again... after getting that back the head was all messed up... so they put a new one on... things were fine for about 24hours then i lost one of my side stones.... they replaced it but had to send it back to there corporate office and was told that I might not have it back intime for my wedding well I flipped out.... they were going to give me a loner .... well I got it back in time and now things are fine ... And like you I have sapphires on the side and I was so worried about them.... everything will be fine .... There are a bunch of us out there ....

Re: Engagement ring horror
About a month after my fiance and I were engaged I also noticed that my ring was a little loose. I have a diamond in the middle with 2 smaller ones on either side. We brought it back and they tightened the setting, and they said it occasionally happens due to wear. A month after I had gotten it fixed, it happened again, so once again they tightened it.. I stopped wearig my ring to bed and it has helped and it hasnt loosened at all. I am paranoid as well and check it every so often. My fiance ended up getting a jewelry kit so he can fix it on his own and not have the jeweler hold it for a day or so.. So I understand what you are going through..

Ok, you're hubby may be an amazing person, but unless he is a qualified gemologist, I hate to say this, DON'T let him fix your ring. I realize that you also haven't had a great experience with the `professionals' fixing it, but I shudder to think what could happen to it!!!!

Your ring is most likely defective - I would have them make you a whole new one, in the correct size.
I'd apply the '3 strikes, you're out' rule here.

It's nice to know I'm not the only one out there that this has happened to. I feel like they keep thinking I'M the one doing something to the ring because every time they give it back 'fixed' (yeah right), something else goes wrong with it.
My FH took it with him this morning and he's going to the jewelery store when it opens.
I'll let you know what happens when I get back from work today.

Re: Engagement ring horror
maybe you have to have the setting redone in your corret size so then you will not have to deal with something that has been altered as sometimes that can affect the setting ect, certain rings I needed sized needed to be remade and it does ot cost much

Re: Engagement ring horror
I was at work recently and I looked down at my ring to see that the diamond was GONE!!!!! I freaked out and started having a panic attack. Luckily my assistant found it next to my desk in my office!!! I went and had it fixed and now it's fine. Don't freak out just breathe. At least you know that someone is willing to fix the problem for you. It's NOT the end of the world!!!!

Actually, I don't know whether this would make you happy or not...
But when I got my ring almost a year ago, it rattled too when I put it to my ear. We gave it back to his aunt and she brought it to get fixed.
Probably a month later or so, I heard the rattling again. It still rattles. I don't know whether it's the cut of the princess or poor workmanship but it hasn't (knock on wood) fallen out. It just rattles.

I have a princess cut and it doesn't rattle at all... i've had it for 9 months. I'd be so paranoid if I heard it rattling! Does yours have 4 corner prongs?

Re: Engagement ring horror
one of my side stones came lose last year- but after the fixed the setting it's fine
the setting was crooked - b/c my ring was HUGE and had to go down to a 4.5
but I have to get it reset anyway to make it work with my w-band- so I am having it made in my size

Re: Engagement ring horror
i had problems the first few weeks with my ring...i had to get it fixed a few times for loose stones...i even lost one of the little ones :( but i eventually had a vendor we know at the flee market make a mold of my ring and make anew setting with white gold for the setting and yellow gold for the ring (originally it was all 18k and way too soft). it all worked out for me, but it took time and frustration. i wish you the best! i know my fi felt horrible, like he bought a bad ring (even though its beautiful, he just didnt know that 18k was too soft and the jeweler didnt let him know). ~lacey
