Engagement Rings

We are planning on getting engaged later this year, and just started looking at rings. Where were your rings purchased, will we get a better deal (i.e. the most for the money) from a small jeweler or from a larger store. Any and all help would be appreciated!! Thanks.

Engagement Rings

Mine was purchased at Shanoa in the Diamond District. It is all registered with those jewelry organizations and I got a certified diamond which I recommend doing. It is more money, but it has GIA papers. The people there were very nice and there is a HUGE selection of diamonds. I also got my wedding band there.

My Fiance bought my ring with a small jeweler in the city. You tend to get more for your money than a store like Fortunoff's or Tiffany's. You should definitely get one that has GIA papers.

We found a better deal at a smaller jeweler too. However, not on 47th Street. Try Sampieri Jewelers, i think the address is 86 Bowery off Canal St. Got a great diamond with all the GIA papers.

Engagement Rings

My FI bought the diamond at H & H in the diamond district in midtown. I wasn't part of the process, but he said that there isn't much bargaining to be done due to low markups on diamonds. He did search around different shops to see who could give him the best of the 4C's. Definitely get a GIA certificate and get the ring re-appraised afterward to ensure what you really have is what you thought you were getting (you will have to pay about $150 to an independent appraiser). Also, don't forget, when you do actually get the ring, have it insured! good luck

My ring is from Good Old Gold also. My husband said Jonathan is a pleasure to work with, so I got my wedding band there too.

I would suggest that you go to the Diamond District (47th Street in Manhattan). A little trick...the dealers do not like to lose the first sale of the day (it is a superstition). If you can get there when they open, promptly at 10:00, preferably during the week when they are not too busy, you can sometimes get a great deal. They are not open on Saturdays (the majority) and are open on Sundays. I think you'll get a better deal when they are less busy during the week. Good luck!

Sorry I had an extra E in there. He is really so nice I just spoke to him about where to get a matching wedding band. (He only does stones) He offered to shop with us. He also mentioned the NY Times will be doing an article on the diamond industry this Sunday.

Phillip Joseph in Bellmore

He got mine at Phillip Joseph. They are so nice there , my FI went there and they really helped them and I have seen my ring elsewhere for 1,000 dollars more so I know he got a good deal. Another thing he does is guarantees the ring, if anything should happen to your relationship he will buy the ring back for the same price you paid. I know this isn't something that you want to hear, but my friend got engaged and broke it off and he lost a couple thousand dollars. Phillip hasn't had many people give the rings back he said he gets more guys that have bought him rings that they bought from other jewlers, so i think he is good luck :o) It is very important to get GIA papers because ther are alot of dealers , especially the ones at tri county that use cynthetic diamonds, so be careful & go to a reputible jewler

BlueNile.com - Worth Taking a Look At

I know it sounds scary to buy a diamond online, but BlueNile is actually a very good site with fair prices. A close friend of mine bought his fiance's diamond from Blue Nile, and then got it set locally. When he got it appraised the price was right one, and the diamond looks fantastic. They sell GIA certified diamonds, which is the most reputable certification. If you are spending a lot of money you should only buy a GIA diamond!

BlueNile.com - Got mine there!

Hey, folks... My fi got my ring at BlueNile... (we picked it out together, actually). I was wary of buying online, but we made sure we could return it without a problem if things were not as promised. Well... the ring came, and it`s beautiful. Had it appraised. Did not tell the jeweler where it came from before she gave the appraisal. She appraised it (a one-carat emerald cut) at - get this - $3000 more than we paid. She also said it was rare to see such clarity in an emerald cut. Just something to consider.
