Ensure v. Insure

Ensure v. Insure

I always thought that there was a difference.
I just looked up the definitions though and got:

Ensure
en·sure ( P ) Pronunciation Key (n-shr)
tr.v. en·sured, en·sur·ing, en·sures
To make sure or certain; insure: Our precautions ensured our safety. See Usage Note at assure.

Insure
in·sure ( P ) Pronunciation Key (n-shr)
v. in·sured, in·sur·ing, in·sures
v. tr.

To provide or arrange insurance for: a company that insures homeowners and businesses.
To acquire or have insurance for: insured herself against losses; insured his car for theft.
To make sure, certain, or secure. See Usage Note at assure.

It appears from this that it seems not to matter which one I use.
Is that true? I swear a learned a difference once.

They are not exactly synonymous. You would never say to ensure a house. That is always insure. Likewise, you would never say I would insure your safety.

ENSURE is to make sure of safety or trust or better yet a guarantee (more of a feeling or sentiment)

INSURE is to actually take precautions by providing a service (an actual act)

Those are my own interpretations. Certainly not in stone. Hope it helps.
