Entire class suspended for food fight

And with snow days.. that's about an extra 2 weeks off.. unless they bag them in June.


MEMPHIS, Tenn. - A cafeteria food fight on 'meat loaf day' led to the suspension of the entire eighth-grade class at a Memphis school. The students were suspended after refusing to clean up the mess they caused.



'Given an opportunity first to apologize for their behavior and help with the cleanup, most of the class refused to cooperate,' school spokesman Vince McGaskill said.


The food fight broke out Wednesday at Geeter Middle School, which has 637 students in grades six through eight. Meat loaf and chicken were on the menu.


Principal Jada Meeks suspended students who were in the cafeteria during the fight, meaning the youngsters' parents must meet with school officials before the children can return to class.


The cause of the disturbance was not immediately known. No serious injuries were reported.


'Suspending students is never desirable,' McGaskill said. 'In this case, the principal felt that strong, some may say shocking measures, were called for to spur change.'

i never understood suspending. i dont like the food. i throw it. i get to stay home and sleep in for 2 weeks and eat good food. please, don't punish me anymore.

I know. The teacher s& staff should have a food fight & make the 8th graders clean up!

that'd be great. or even if they just stood the kids in a line and started throwing food.. at them and around them

i dont know how much the parents would like that one though..

That's not what would happen in my house...if I was ever suspended I would be woke up at the crack of dawn and given a long long list of chores that would need to be done aside from being grounded for probably forever.

for a normal suspension i can understand that. but in this situation when they really didn't know who started it and just suspended the entire class. thats ridiculous. i'm sure there were plenty of kids just sitting there minding their own business.

Well how about failing lunch? I did in Junior High. My folks had to come up and get it explained to them

really? we didn't get grade. Not even an 'attitude' grade which we got for other classes.


If I was suspended for something I deserved, I'm sure I'd be punished at home. But it was unfait, I wouldn't be. In this situation, how is a parent going to know?

Thats what my folks wanted to know. It was for a food fight. we never got a grade in lunch but this little grade is on my official record.

I got written up once in 7th grade for 'throwing food' and the write up was so ridiculous that my parents were even laughing and went down to the school and fought it!

I swear the write up said:

'At 12:23 pm, Valerie threw one tater tot (I remember this clearly, I took one tater tot and sort of tossed it onto my friends tray directly across from me) and at 12:27 pm threw another one' (which wasnt true). This woman was probably the NASTIEST teacher I ever had, and she HATED me for no reason!

My parents were not the types to defend me if I was wrong, believe me I was punished for anything I did bad in school, but in this case my mom said to the principal that it was obvious that this woman was trying to get me in trouble. Luckily the school believed my mom, and dropped the write up.
