Envelope Addressing

Envelope Addressing

I have an 'Etiquette' question.......any help would be appreciated.

I know that when I address the Outer Envelope, I am supposed to write all of the words out (no abbreviations). I was also told that any number under 100 should also be written out.

I have a lot of guests with Street Numbers rather than Street Names. Does that mean if someone lives on 89th Street that I should write
Eighty-Ninth Street (and if so, should I include the Hyphen between Eighty and Ninth)?

This is so confusing.....

Thanks in advance.

Re: Envelope Addressing

I think it's appropriate to abbreviate titles like Mrs., Dr., Mr., etc.

I think you should write out the street name (e.g. West Avenue instead of W. Ave.)

The rule to write out numbers less than 100 is a rule of grammar for prose writing that I do not believe applies to addressing envelopes (as far as I am concerned). I would write the house and apartment numbers as 1, 2, 3, etc. and perhaps write out the street name if the street name is a number. However, I think it's all right to write the street name with 1, 2, 3 instead of writing out the entire word.

So, I think both are correct:

23 East 81st Street
and
23 East Eighty-First Street

To be honest, I prefer the first one.

Re: Envelope Addressing

In addition to what Kara wrote above...the rule for writing out 'numbers' only applies to those from 1 through 10...

ie:

Mr. and Mrs. Smith
2909 Tenth Street
Anywhere, New York 12345

and

Mr. and Mrs. Smith
2909 89th Street
Anywhere, New York 12345
