Envelope Etiquette

Envelope Etiquette

Hi All,

I'm putting together my list to send the calligrapher. A lot of the websites are stating what goes on the outer envelope and what goes on the inner envelope, but i'm only having one envelope...so i'm not sure what to do with families:

1. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Doe and Family

or

2. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Doe
Justin, Brian, and Sabrina

or

3. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Doe
Mr. Justin Doe
Ms. Brianna Doe
Ms. Sabrina Doe

I just ran into this problem tonight! I did the 3rd option since most of the 'children' I'm inviting are over the age of 18 but still live with their parents

I wrote the 3rd one just because I wanted to be specific since some families not everyone was invited.

I would write 'the doe family' and I believe if the children are over 18 they're supposed to get their own invitations.

Proper etiquette dictates either option 2 or 3. All invited parties should be listed by name on the invitation, and anyone over 18 should receive their own.

I did 'and Family' on my engagement party invitations, and someone told their daughter she wasn't invited because it didn't say her name specifically. SO, on my Save the Dates, I wrote everyone's name (the way you did in option 2) and my aunt laughed at me for listing the names of her 4 children on the envelope. It's not the end of the world either way, but I think I'm still going to avoid 'and Family' and go with option 3 on my invites because I'd rather someone think it's overkill than someone think they're not invited.

If everyone in the family is invited, I wrote The Smith Family .. we didn't have anyone under 16 so for a family where the mother and father were invited and one of the children,
we wrote:
Mr. & Mrs. Smith
Mr. John Smith

and then the address.

Thanks for the feedback ladies!

I know you're 'supposed to' send a separate envelope if they're over 18 but for many reasons I won't get into...this family is only getting one!

I'm doing the Doe Family. If there are 18 year olds in that family I'm going to give them their own invitation.
