i didn't have an engagement party, but i would expect it to say something like
thanks for celebrating with us and for the lovely/generous/useful (etc.) gift. can't wait to see you at the wedding....

Thanks for celebrating our engagement with us and for your generous gift (if it was money - if not name the gift). We are looking forward to celebrating with you at the wedding!

I wrote out personalized cards to everyone and mentioned the gift they gave and how am using it. I also mentioned why they are special to us.

If the person gave me a physical gift I mentioned the gift and thanked them for celebrating our engagement with us.
If they gave money I thanked them for their generous gift and for celebrating our engagement with us. However, certain people got special little messages such as my mom, sister and best friend who really helped me so much.

I rotated, I had like 3 or 4 'thank you' sayings and just rotated so that a monther and son wouldn't get the same thing... but more or less they said 'thank you for sharing in our day and for your generous gift'
I had to write a few in Italian... that was NOT fun, considering I don't speak a lick of it, FH does and he didn't help me at all.
