with one of my responses I got a check, do I send the thank you now, or after the wedding?

I think either is proper. I would send it now, unless this was someone you wanted to send a picture too.
You should deposit the check now though, so it isn't oustanding when they try to balance their check book.

I agree about sending the thank you now, because it tells the sender that you did receive the check and you appreciate this gesture.
