etiquette question

FH and I are considering the possibility of having a very small, intimate dinner-party type wedding with just close family and friends where we can give them superstar treatment....But we are sad about missing out on having a big party with all our friends.

Is it possible to have some kind of party after our wedding for all those guests that we weren't able to invite? Would people be insulted by this? And how would I go about wording an invite like this?

Re: etiquette question

I have been to a wedding reception that didn't include an actual wedding ceremony. The couple got married at city hall in march and then had a reception to celebrate in june. The invitation was worded something like this:

Jane & John Doe cordially invite you to join them in celebrating their marriage.

Cocktails, dinner and dancing at The Valley Inn.

I think that's fine. You should do whatever it is that you want. If you're having a small actual wedding, people will understand - plenty of other people do the same. I'm sure they would be glad to celebrate with you after the fact!

Me personally, I would just leave it at the one reception, wether it be dinner or something really small. I'm not sure how many friends you have, but I'm sure the rest will understand. I've had people in my family elope where noone was invited and we got over it.
