Etiquette questions

Etiquette questions

1) If people attend a party and don't bring you a gift, do you send a thank you?

2) If people attend a party and didn't bring a gift because they already bought one for you, do you send a thank you for their presence?

Thanks for your help!

Great - thanks! I'm so clueless about this stuff sometimes.

yes to both of these. you would simply write 'thank you for attending my party. it was great to see you anf have you share in my special day'

in lieu of 'thank you for your generous gift'

but the people who gave you a gift @ another time - you need to send them a thank you for the gift you received (regardless if they came to your party of not). if possible you can incorproate it into one thank you.

good luck........

No and No.

You do NOT have to send a thank you to people who attend your wedding reception. You certainly can if you want to -- but I don't really see the point. And many people will think you are fishing for a gift if you do it!

Re: Etiquette questions

in similar situations some have worded their thank you's with something like this: 'the significant investment you made to come' (ouch, but to the point) or: 'thank you for sharing our day, and for making the trip to be there for us both.'

etiquette also says people have up to one year to send a gift, so you may want to wait a bit if you want to send them a zinger like option one. haha.

What if it's for a pseduo-engagement party? How should I handle that?

I know how to handle my wedding from reading the 05 posts; I'm just unsure about this recent event.

Send a thank you to both
and if an attendant sends you a gift early, you send them a tank you ASAP and then another one for sharing your day.

Re: Etiquette questions

Engagement parts (pseduo or other wise) are a pretty new phenomenon so there is not a strong gift giving culture around them. I didn't have one, but based on what I've heard many people do not bring gifts to them.

Thank you notes are written to express your gratitude at receiving a GIFT. If someone hasn't given you one, then you don't need to write one.

If you would like to write someone a nice note (or email) expressing how nice it was to see them you certainly can -- but you are not obligated to. Also if you are not the note writing type I don't see why you should start now.

Think of all the parties you've been to that were not wedding related -- have you received thank you notes for every BBQ and cookout you attended? What about graduation parties? Just because your party was related to your wedding doesn't change how you should behave.
