FH and I were working on our registry over the weekend and here's the question: how much *should* the everyday china cost? what quality should it be? We saw a set by Noritake that we really liked for everyday but it was in the 'china' department and $45 a place setting--is that too much? We also saw another set we liked that was only $20 per setting. Is that more the price range we should look at? We're very confused if you can't tell.

Re: Everyday China--price?
it all depends on what you want. I know personally i'm not going to have my everyday china forever--i'll get bored with it.
We got a pfaltzgraff set which was 20 per setting. It's really up to you but i think if you get an expensive china set maybe get a more inexpensive everyday so you can be sure to get a good portion of it from the registry---reasonable prices people will most likely buy it for you.

Re: Everyday China--price?
we didn't get china for everyday, just plain simple settings from Williams Sonoma with lots of pieces. I think I got three 30 piece groups that are $70 each (6 settings of five dishes) and lots of extra dishes ranging from $15-over $100.
I chose Villery and Boch for my every day dishes and another V & B pattern for my good dishes - the everyday dishes turns out to be like $50 a set though

I think you should register for the set you really love.

My 'everyday' china won't be china at all, but stoneware. I picked a really pretty and colorful 20 piece stoneware set. Mainly because the other casual china was too expensive. But I don't think yours sounds too expensive. Register for what you really want.

We're registering for formal china as well, so we figured we should keep the price lower on the everyday, but we didn't know how much lower. The one we originally put on the registry was less than 1/4 the price of the formal china. The one we both really liked yesterday was about 1/2 the price of our formal china.

Re: Everyday China--price?
Our formal china is $119 a setting our casual is sold per piece, we chose Lenox's Butlers Pantry Gourmet. It's probably more than $50 a setting, but I love it- I didn't register for towels or anything like that- just stuff I wouldn't buy on my own. I think if you register for a ton of stuff you'll have only a slight chance of getting a whole set of anything. Know what I mean? Just a bunch of odds and ends.
Are people going to be giving you gifts for the wedding or $$$?

I'm not sure what they're going to do. We have a lot of guests from NY but 1/2 our guests are from OOT. I'm sure the OOT people are going to give generously, but I don't know whether it will be from the registry or a check.
I think we're not registering for bedding (we can't agree on anything) or towels, so maybe it will even out
ETA: In case anyone is curious, here's what we registered for: Wedgwood and here are the 2 casual china patterns we liked but though might be too expensive: Calvin Klein and Noritake

That's perfect- you can always get that stuff later- we've already gotten all of our formal and most of our casual china! Are you having a shower?

Definitely. I don't have too much experience with NY weddings, but what I heard (and what I told FH) is that a lot of people, particularly relatives, buy gifts from the registry for the shower--including things like china. Is that generally true?

I think that's the norm. I think you should register for whats most important to you. Some people will tell you to register for anything and everything but I think thats how you end up with three settings of formal china...it happens a lot. Make sure you register for things in different price ranges, I think most people (not close relatives or friends) spend about $50 on a shower gift. If you want you can look at my registry for ideas.
