Everything you need to know about changing your name...

Dealing with this now and figured I would help out anyone that needs it bc its not as hard as I thought..

First go to Social Security and Change with them

Second go to DMV

Instructions:
http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/dmvfaqs.htm

Form to change your name

Form to change your registration

Third.. get a new passport

Instructions:
http://travel.state.gov/passport/fri/ChangeName/ChangeName_851.html

For for name change on passport

Fourth.. call your bank, credit cards, insurance carriers, and inform your job of the name change for tax filing purposes.

Hope this helps!

You can also got to DMV first and then Social Security if it's more convenient. I did that so that I'd have a photo id sooner :)

I didnt know that!! Cool thanks

What happens with the passport....? I don't wanna give mine up, I have sooooooooooooooooo many stamps

oops started doing this but it seems I started with the wrong things! I changed my bank first bc we had to in order to deposit our wedding checks since they were all made out to Mr. & Mrs....!! I still haven't got to the DMV or SS, totally dreading it!

---

The bank let us deposit those checks for some reason. I'm not changing my name until January so I was afraid they wouldn't let us deposit the checks but they let us. I had to hyphenate my name and once it's officially changed, I can just let them know.

They should send it back to you just like when you get it renewed every 10 years. I didn't know they did that and got all sentimental when I had my passport renewed and before I sent it in, I made photocopies of every stamp....I'm a nerd!

I went to SS and changed it then DMV but the line was too long so I left! LOL! SS is not a problem without photo ID. I just showed them my marriage certificate and they were fine.

Crashing...but this is a great thread!!

I renewed mine in `03 & got my original passport back in the mail with the new, updated one.

I think you can do these out of order.. not sure. I just know those are all the forms you need
