we have a rottweiler that we ADORE and she is the best dog ever. We are thinking about a new dog and I'd love to have a Shar-pei (wrinkle dogs). DH wants another rotti or a Weimeraner.

Here is our rotti, Bailey!

fh's dog was half sharpei half yellow lab. she started off all wrinkly but as she got older, she looked more like a lab.

My parents old neighbors in Long Island had a rotti, and my neighbor's in Florida have one too and they love our beagle, Byron.

Most Sharpei's I have met have been pretty mean.

A good friend has a weimeraner and it's a great dog with their kids.

I am a Shar Pei FANATIC!!! I have everything you can possibly think of. Except the real thing . (I;m allergic)

I can tell you that they are a very pricey dog to own. Most end up needing face lifts. There wrinkles sometimes cover there noses & they can't breathe. Also they are prone to get ear infections. (makes it understanding that most people that own them have $$)

i think the way a dog behaves all depends on how u raise them. i have heard sharpei's can be nasty but i believe its nurture over nature that makes a dog what it is. my brother has 2 pitts that are the sweetest dogs ever!i have heard sharpei's are very high maintanence, with the wrinkles and ear infections, eye infections etc. they are soooo cute though. one of the reasons we are not getting a bull dog is because of the extremely high maintanence . weimeraners (sp) are very hyper from what i have heard.

Our neighbors had two Shar-peis. They were very cute and sweet-natured dogs.

My best friend from college, who was an animal fanatic, has worked at many kennels and shelters across the country and has said that sharpeis are the ONLY dogs she considers to have a vicious side. She also said they're known to not be good around kids and a lot of families gave them up for just that reason. Weimeraners, on the other hand, are awesome.

I guess I'll have to agree with this then...those dogs really were very sweet....

If you want a sharpei, please consider getting one from a rescue or kill shelter. If you look on petfinders.com, you'll see a lot of sharpeis or sharpei mixes that desperately need homes.

Anyone looking to get a dog, adopt from a shelter. You are saving a life.

I don't know much about the behavior of Sharpeis, but I do know that you need to clean between their wrinkles because they can get very dirty and develop problems (sores, I think)

please consider getting your next dog from a shelter in Georgia. There are so many high kill shelters in Ga that have rottie, rottie mixes, sharpeis, etc. Do a search on petfinders.com . You'll be saving a life.

We thought about getting a weimaraner, but they are VERY hyper and require A LOT of exercise. I don't know anything about shar peis though.

I have heard questionable things about the temperament of Shar-peis. weimeraners are very active dogs and need a lot of room to play and run around outside!

shar peis are one owner kind of dogs. my fh's dog was wonderful with people who lived in the house, like parents and him, but anyone else, she hated. very protective nature. they were fighting dogs, which is why they have all that skin, actually, vice versa, but they were bred to be aggressive guard dogs. but loyal as anything to those they loved. it took fh's dog about 9 months before i could pet her, but by the time she died, she was my best friend,

Thank You!! She is the love of our lives and many people are flabbergasted at her temperment and behavior. She is a 100 lb lap dog and usually sleeps in the bed with us.

Regi: I was searching yesterday for rescue organizations and found one down here....www.ssrr.org. They had an abandoned mother and her 7-9 pups for adoption. DH is SERIOUSLY considering another rotti when we get our house.

Weimeraners are very high maintenance. I wanted to get one b/c I've been obsessed w. the breed for so long- they are just so beautiful- but after doing a lot of research- i decided against it. They need a lot of exercise and are prone to destroying the house if they don't get it. They need to 'work'.. although I'm not sure if they are classed as sporting or working- but they need A LOT of activity- and a LOT of space to run around...

I am so happy you did that. I volunteer in a no kill cat shelter in queens. yeah, the majority will probably not get adopted and spend the rest of their lives in a shelter. But, when I read about the very high kill shelters in the country(sigh, a lot are in the south ).
I realize how lucky these cats are. The volunteers are nuturing and do the best for the cats.
Rotties are great dogs. Good luck with your search.
Let me know how it turns out.
