So FI and I are toying with the idea of doing the following:
Extend CH for an extra 30 mins Pros: our RH is 45mins away from the church. It will give our guests time to get to the RH or to check into the hotel before hand if they are planning on staying at the hotel near the RH. It would also give the BP time to take pics before the CH so we can all enjoy it too(I may also want to make another stop before the RH to take pics but it's literally 5 mins away from the church so it's not out of the way).
Extend Reception another hour Pros: nothing will really have to be rushed and it gives more time for a 'dance party' at the end for the younger crowd who usually stays later.
What would you girls rather have if you were attending the wedding?

since I'm much more of an 'eater' than a 'dancer', I'd say extend the CH! Most ppl love the CH too and it gives them more time to get there in case they hit traffic.

Hmm, I would say the reception, but both are tempting.

We extended the coktail hour by a 1/2 b/c we wanted to enjoy the WHOLE wedding. We are taking pictures in between and didn't want to miss anything! The CH also gives you time to say hello to everyone and not have a rec line.

also a good point. I had mentioned to my mom about nixing the whole rec line and just greeting everyone/thanking them at the CH but she thinks it would be rude to not do the rec line. I really would prefer not doing one.

I definitely vote for extending the CH. Ours is going to be an hour and a half. We extended it to give people extra time to get there since people are going to be traveling from all over. Everybody loves CH and depending on how many people you're having, an hour may not be enough tiem for everyone to get there and wait on the lines to get food.
As for extending the reception, I guess it depends on how long your reception is already. For example ours is from 8 to 1am, so I definitely wouldn't extend the reception in that case. Most weddings I've been to, people start leaving by a certain time. IMO, i would hate to extend the reception an extra hour and people to start leaving anyway. Ho long is your reception now?

We're doing a full VHour.. so we're already at a 5 hour reception, but I wish we would have added a half hour to the CH then a half hour to the Recept.
Talk it over with your BM and see what he/she says. I know if our guests get there early they can enter the CH.
and I'm sure if you guys are partying it up, you can talk to your vendors about staying an extra hour.

I say reception - but I think part of it also depends on the start time and time between church/CH. If guests start hearing that it is extended they may be a little lax about getting there ontime, and I would want everyone there at the real start time, even if it's 1.5 hours. But also at the Riviera, it would be great to be outside for the extra time before moving inside on a nice day. Again, may depend on time of day. Remember also that for the extra time you have to pay the musicians, it was pretty significant for our extra hour with a band. Either way, go for it, every extra minute will be well worth it for you and FH!!

I voted for extending the reception. I love dancing and am always so sad when the reception is over so I would love it if a wedding I attended had an extra hour during the reception.

Extend the Reception. Just went to a wedding with a CH that was 1 hour and 1/2 and it felt like a very long time.

extend the CH! you have all those benefits AND you can get all your greetings and shmoozing out of the way there so you can party it up during the whole reception!

Re: Extended CH or Extended Reception? long...sorry
I'd rather have teh longer reception and fit in more music sets. Honestly, when I first walk into a CH, I'm so overwhelmed by the food that I'd think I'd love extra time. However, by the end of 40 minutes or so, I'm more than ready to move onto the reception.
Your RH should have something set up for 'early arriving' guests such as champagne with berries or passed hors d'ouvres.
Just a note though, if you extend your reception (ours is a 5-hour reception after the CH), you will have to pay the photographer and musicians for the extra hour.

I extended my reception by an hour. I wanted to have a long party and not feel rushed. We're doing a VH hour too.
The only down side is that I had to pay the band members for extended hour. That was the only con really.
EDITED: I have Duet for 10 hours so they are coming to me at 3pm and leaving at 1am at the end of the reception. I did not have to pay extra - I would check with your vendors though!!
