We want to make a sort of fake wedding cake, with the top layer of the cake being real so we can cut into it, and then save the top layer for our anniversary. We don't want to serve wedding cake to our guests because that is one place we are trying to cut back money wise and we have a choice of three desserts plus I am thinking about the chocolate fountain. Has anyone ever done this at their wedding? If so, do you know any bakers(we still want a real top layer and decorations) out east on Long Island who may do something like this and do you know the cost of something like this? Our wedding is in Westhampton. Thanks!

Re: Fake cake, have you ever heard of this?
I just met a woman who does Styrofoam cakes! I saw a bunch of pictures and they looked so real! She said they rent them for cheap and there's a few to chose from. Then you get a sheet cake in the back for dessert. Im considering it b/c she said they can be much prettier b/c they're so much cheaper.
Ill try to get her name & get back to you. She used to have her own cake shop but now works out of her home.

I have heard of using a fake cake and my friend's hall in Jersey did this. But I never saw it used without serving cake. People may wonder why there is no cake, when the bride and groom cut the cake? Just a thought. You can get a sheet cake made and have them serve that in the back. Sheet cakes cut cost tremendously! Good Luck!

I like that idea a lot. Though I don't plan on having too elaborate of a cake. I think its silly to spend so much money on a cake when it could be used elsewhere.

one of the LIW vendors does this - it hink it is worth it if you want an elaborate design - but if youwant pretty simple it is probably worth it to use the cake included

just keep in mind, if you get the cake elsewhere, your hall just may end up charging you a cutting fee which is per slice, so definitely check out and see if its worth doing it.

Yes! I've heard of it. It's made out of styro. and only a slight part of it, is real (for you to cut the cake.) Then, they take it to the 'back' and serve the same cake in sheet cake form. It saves a lot of money b/c bakers don't have to tier the cake, decorate, etc...

I've heard of a fake cake -- a lot of halls use them, when they tell you where to cut - its Fake!

I had two pieces of their cake at a showcase I went to last month. Delicious! Their styrofoam cakes are quite beautiful and he takes a lot of pride in his work.
I did not talk pricing or anything with them, so I'm sorry I can't help you in that area.

Re: Fake cake, have you ever heard of this?
YES! I have read that this is a tradition in other countries to save money...the bride and groom cut into the stryofoam one and then it is whisked away to the back and guests are served a sheet cake....Why not just serve the sheet cake to begin with if everyone knows about it is my questions?????

Thank you everyone for your comments. We are not getting married in a hall so we don't have to worry about that part of it. NY Bride, if you find the name, that would be great. Thanks.

I've heard of it, but I think people usually have sheet cake to serve their guests. After FH and you cut the cake, it's wheeled out of sight, and the less expensive cake is served.

With Christina Michaels, you get the really decorative one to display so that people could take photos of it and you don't have to worry about germs (ugh!) landing on a cake after people crowd around it to take photos of it, or have it wilt or melt after being under the lights all night; the sheet cake that will be passed out right after you finish with the cutting of the cake tradition will be all ready to cut up so there is no time lag between the cutting by the bride and groom and the slicing by the staff; I *think* you get a small bride and groom's cake (one) to actually cut into to do the ritual that you could eat. I also *think* you get an anniversary cake one year later, so you don't have to freeze your own for a year. I think it sounds like a great idea. Does anyone have any prices comparisons between this scenario and a traditional cake?

Re: Fake cake, have you ever heard of this?
That's really weird.
It seems like a cool idea, but once guest see cake, they may want some. A lot of people are really traditinal and will want to eat wedding cake for good luck to the rbide and groom. If you want to save money, you can do the fake cake w/ real top layer and then buy sheet cakes at costco (i've heard they're yummy) and ahve the hall cut that and serve it..it would be WAY cheaper.
