Re: fake wedding cake...
i actually want to find someone who will do that for a grooms cake. the grooms cake i want is 3 tiered and very detailed, and i plan to have it at the reception, since i really want to surprise FH in front of everyone. but...since wwe will already have wedding cake there (i dont want to subsititute it for our wedding cake, i want it in addition to). i dont think it will really get eaten. plus, i have already been told that this will be a quite expensive cake to make. anyone know of a place that will do this??

Re: fake wedding cake...
my FSIL did that at her wedding, they had the fake cake that they cut and then cut up sheet cakes for everyone, the best part was that one of their aunts went up with a butcher knife thinking yo uhad to cut your own and went at the fake cake. we all screamed at her and she was like WHAT!!!
ill post a pic when i get on my computer instead of jons n show u the cake :)

Re: fake wedding cake...
when i worked at a catering hall... (Russos actually)
i remember beign in the back when it was cake time... and already having cake ready for the guests....
the cake we served was the EXACT cake they ordered... and i believe the cake they cut was a 'model' cake.... (dont mark my words on that) but i do vaguely remember after serving cake.. seeing the cake table in the back with the cake andone piece missing....
i think it woudl be something i would look into if necessary

Re: fake wedding cake...
i'm definately looking into this because we want a fancy looking cake but cant afford one.
my cousin is a pastry chef and at her wedding she made a fake cake for the floor and made the actual cake in large sheet cake forms to serve to the guest...IT LOOKED AMAZING! and if she didnt tell us, we would have never known!

Re: fake wedding cake...
I think that is a very cute idea. I don't know if I would though. Not so much because I don't want to but it is more money and something else to add to the list of things to do or order..lol

Re: fake wedding cake...
its a great way to have an elaborate cake- but a smaller version. (= cheaper). It doesn't matter tht the cake on display only feeds 75 ppl, as long as the sheet cakes in the back feed 200.

Re: fake wedding cake...
Actually most catering halls use a fake cake as the presentation cake (why do you think it lasts so long out on the floor) I forgot who told me that all the tiers are made of foam and they have fondent over them. The catering halls prepare a sheet cake in the back that is pre-sliced... Ever wonder how you get a square piece of a round cake - or that the pieces may not have the specific details that the 'presenation cake' has.
I think it's a great idea... My FH friend got married and they had a real tiered wedding cake and as the night went on we all started placing bets as to when the top tier would actually come falling off. All the tiers started to slide off (it was warm) Before they went to go cut the cake the matre'd took the cake in the back and I assume they fixed it.

I think its a great idea. Especially if you are having a vienese hour I know alot of people who will skip the cake for the other stuff.
