Looking for apartments, but not sure which neighborhoods are nicer. I know many cities have areas that aren't so nice, but what are decent cities on the whole?
(looking at Alexandria, Arlington, McLean, Fairfax, Falls Church, etc). Don't want to be TOO close to DC, but close enough to commute to every morning.
TIA!

Re: Familiar with Virginia (in DC Metro area)?
I lived in DC for a while (Dupont Circle), and had a ton of friends who lived in Alexandria--it was a great area with lots of apts. Falls Church is more residential, more families and houses, fewer high-rise apts. McLean too. All four towns are generally good though--check out the specific neighborhood though--every area has bad neighborhoods...Good luck, I loved DC!

Re: Familiar with Virginia (in DC Metro area)?
old town alexandria is beautiful!! i lived there for about 9 months. other nice places are the rosslyn/clarendon area. imo falls church, mclean and especially fairfax are too long of a commute. if you're driving it will be ridiculously long and if you're taking the metro it's rather expensive and also hard to get a seat if you're not at the first stop on the line. especially on the orange line, that one is notoriously crowded.
fm me if you want more info about my old apt complex or if you have more specific questions, like the name of a complex or something. in general though northern va is very nice and has very few seedy areas, at least that i've seen. now md that's a whole different story

so far I REALLY like some of the Archstone complexes. Decent price and they allow dogs!

I went to college in Fredericksburg, VA (one hour outside of DC), but have so many friends now living in Alexandria (Old town IS AMAZING).

fbil lives in an amazing complex in alexandria...almost like city complexes with doormen, pools, gym, etc. his place has a washer and dryer in the apartment, not just in the complex. they have a screened in porch, parking garage, etc...and they pay a good price. and they love it...beautiful, so much to do.

yeah they have some really nice complexes there! my old one had a washer/dryer in the apt, dishwasher, sunroom, parking garage, rooftop pool and gym. nice stuff! and all within two minutes walking distance of the metro. anyway, do you have the specific names of the archstone complexes? i'm not sure which ones they are. you can fm me if you like.

Northern VA...is probably the only place in the country that has a hotter... more cut-throat real estate market than Long Island.

Those are all nice areas! My friends live in Fairfax and I always like it there. But Arlintgton is soo close to the city, but still serperate from it. I used to live right in the middle of the city in Foggy Bottom. So close to the white house and other monuments. I really loved it.
I miss DC!!

My cousin and her family just relocated from Alexandria to NY due to a business promotion her husband got otherwise they would still be there. They loved it. I also agree about Old Town. It's beautiful.

My sister lives in Alexandria, Mt. Vernon area I think, and it is beautiful! Old Town is so nice!!!! I hear it is super expensive though. She is so close to DC and National Airport (gotta love the commuter flight down there).
