Grieving Center Moriches family wants answers after a gruesome discovery

(02/01/05) RIVERHEAD - A grieving Center Moriches family wants answers after a human leg and foot were delivered to their home Monday in a bag that was supposed to have their father’s private belongings.

Police say Christopher Runyan was given a bag from Sinnicksons Funeral Home that was supposed to contain his deceased dad's things. Runyan says he noticed a foul smell coming from the bag and found a decomposing right leg and foot with a toe tag inside.

The funeral home says they received the bag from Central Suffolk Hospital. According to the funeral home, it is their policy not to open any bags containing personal items. A medical examiner determined the amputated leg belongs to an 82-year-old man who had his leg removed before he died on January 13.

Central Suffolk Hospital is currently investigating the situation

i heard about this, how horrible. i am assuming that the leg was to be 're-attached' by the funeral home prior to burying the 82 yr old man and NOT sent to HIS family. one would think that the hospital would have tagged and communicated this info to the funeral home.

and yet the funeral home assumed it was'personal belongings'
