Help me out everyone, please. My dad and I have had a rough relationship, we didn't talk for 4 years. I finally broke the silence and came to his door, literally. There are a lot of feelings that haven't been resolved. If I got bad grades growing up, he gave me the silent treatment for months. There's too much history, I can't describe it, I know people have much worse situations, I was never physically abused or anything. So now things are ok, we say hi how are you and some friendly phone call stuff, but there's a lot of pain underneath. So as for the father daughter dance....I don't think I can handle anything too over the top like 'daddy's little girl'. I don't really know what would fit, I was thinking 'All you need is love' by the beetles, but I'm not 100 percent happy with that. I don't think I'll be '100' percent happy with anything, but does anyone have any other suggestions?

Did you consider not doing one? It's not a requirement and if it's just uncomfortable why push it. . . it's your day after all and unless your FH wants a mother daughter one it might not even come up. . if you do want one how about something faster. . I'll try to brainstorm some. . nothing on the top of my head. .

Re: Father Daughter Dance
I'm going to ask him if he'd like to have a father daughter dance. I think he'll want to, because most people do this. My parents are contributing to paying for the wedding, so I especially don't think I should 'slight' him. And even though it's uncomfortable I want to do the dance...I just want it to feel ok, ya know? Like if some deep song comes on I may cry and I don't want to feel bad or cry infront of everyone.

I have a rough relationship with my dad and we didn't speak for years. I had my mom walk me down the aisle but had a dance with my dad.
I picked the Elvis Presley verison of 'Always on My Mind' - it was perfect.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. 'Always on my Mind' would narrate the relationship surprisingly well. I've always been a fan of the Willie Nelson version. I'm not sure if I want to be that confrontational about our problems at the wedding. With his personality, it also may embarrass him or anger him. He's contributing a significant amount of money towards the wedding, and he may feel angry and embarrassed if I play a song in front of all these guests implying he hasn't treated me well.

I don't know if you have ever seen the movie Practical Magic but that song is the creepy stalker killer BF's fav song. I would def not use that one. Why don't you ask him what song he would like to dance to? Also don;t worry about getting emotion. Father daughter dances are emotional. I cry just seeing one on TV.

Re: Father Daughter Dance
DH danced with his mom to Madonna's 'I'll Remember'
Mmmm, mmmm Say good-bye to not knowing when The truth in my whole life began Say good-bye to not knowing how to cry You taught me that
Chorus And I'll remember the strength that you gave me Now that I'm standing on my own I'll remember the way that you saved me I'll remember
Inside I was a child That could not mend a broken wing Outside I looked for a way To teach my heart to sing
And I'll remember the love that you gave me Now that I'm standing on my own I'll remember the way that you changed me I'll remember
I learned to let go of the illusion that we can possess I learned to let go I travel in stillness And I'll remember happiness I'll remember [I'll remember] Mmmmm... [I'll remember] Mmmmm...
And I'll remember the love that you gave me Now that I'm standing on my own I'll remember the way that you changed me I'll remember
No I've never been afraid to cry AND I finally have a reason why I'll remember [I'll remember] No I've never been afraid to cry And I finally have a reason why I'll remember [I'll remember] No I've never been afraid to cry And I finally have a reason why I'll remember [I'll remember]

My friend danced to treat her like a lady with her father. It was a more upbeat song.
