Doing something edible is always good. People who are drunk and who have just been dancing for hours will always like chocolates or cookies later on in the night. Plus, it's rare that that stuff will ever go to waste.
I don't think I would ever do a donation, for two reasons. First, there will be a subset of guests who will think you are just skimping them on a cool wedding favor. Second, there a will be another subset of guests who will think that you are being a little snotty by broadcasting a donation to everyone.
Perhaps you could take your favor budget and put a part of it towards a donation and use the rest for favors? This way you are still making a donation, without making it known to everyone.
Ok we're doing donations and I definitely don't think people are going to think we're skimping on favors. We're also giving them an edible favor. I don't see how it's snotty either - if the organization is important to us, I would want people to know what that is and make people more aware of the organization that is important to us. JMO.
ITA! I mean I can see how people may look for a favor but that's why we're giving something edible too.

Re: Favors
I think donations are actually a bit more meaning full......I didn't chose to do that because I like getting favors, so I wanted to give something creative, but a friend of mine recently did a donation to a cause that directly affected her famiy and I thought it was a nice thing to do. And she attached it to cookies. Which I think is great. It's all about what you want. If people don't like your favor to them, OH WELL. If someone is coming to my wedding for my favor, ummm then they shouldn't be there.

ITA! We're doing a donation as well and it has nothing to do with being snotty... Our family and friends will know why we chose that organization and probably expect it from us.
The original cookie cutter with ingredients pack is ADORABLE!!! Very creative and it will def not get thrown away!

I think a donation is a really great idea, and if you have the type of guests that like that thing, then you should do it as a favor.
I was more speaking from experience -- in that I have seen people do donations and I have seen guests talk about them behind their back at the wedding -- so I just wanted to raise that as a possible concern about doing donations. Trust me, when you are dealing with a large group, someone will take offense to it or think you are blabbing about making a donation.
My feeling is that taking a portion of your favor budget and donating without letting anyone know helps out a good cause, but also won't offend anyone.
Again, I think doing a donation is a great idea, but doing it privately prevents anyone from having a negative perception of you.
