Anyone have a creative and useful wedding favor idea? We are thinking about just giving a donation in everyone's name because we feel that all the favors we have gotten have been so useless.

What about an edible favor or a miniature bottle of champagne or wine?

I think we're doing frames. Which will be used for the photobooth

We're doing votive candles.

We want to do something edible. My MOH has mentioned she wants to put together a candy table/buffett, but I was thinking of either Apple cider donuts or artisan jams as well.

I am thinking something edible or a donation myself. I personally have never used any of the favors that were given to me, except the edible ones. My original plan was doing mini-succulents in tin pails, but I think some people won't do anything with them lol.

Your wedding is around the fall time. Maybe you can do some sort of fall themed food favor.

I like the edible idea too. What about Apple cider donuts from the farms out east or something else to do with the season?

I might be doing caramel apples or smores since I'll have a rustic country theme but you cant go wrong with food! LOL

Re: Favors

I'm all about edible favors! I think we're going to do cake pops. Seems like local, organic honey is in now (or is it overdone? :D). Just went to two weddings and got honey at both.

I love this site because I feel like we're all very supportive of each other, and I haven't seen any snarky, rude posts. I've been lurking on other online boards (theknot, weddingwire, weddingbee), and they're not as supportive, for sure!

Donation favors seem to be a pretty contentious topic there. Many of the posters there feel like it's not the thing to do, and here's some responses that I've seen:

1) are you just doing it for a tax write-off?
2) the favor is for the guests. As a guest, if I wanted to donate to a charity, I would do it myself. How does it benefit me?
3) Many charities don't appropriate funds properly with a majority going to 'administrative fees,' and not the actual cause or the actual research, so choose wisely

Many of the posters seemed like they would rather have no favor than a donation favor.

I'm on the fence about donation favors, to be honest. Would you normally be donating money to this charity? If not, then just forget about favors. It's not mandatory. I don't think anyone is going to say...'Remember that wedding that we DIDN'T get a favor from?'

There are all kinds of donation watchdog groups that you can look into, who let you know how much a charity donates to.

An excellent source is Charity Navigator. They break it down very well for you: http://www.charitynavigator.org/

I am so hoping we have room in our budget at the end for Apple Cider donuts! Out venue gives pretzels i think at the end of the night for the guests and we are doing a photobooth and placing a frame at each seating as our favor also.

OMG you have to go to Woodside Apple Orchard out east. Their Apple cider donuts are to die for.

Great - I'll have to contact Woodside. My reservation with using an orchard is that so many don't open until September and I feel like it's too close to my wedding. I'm trying to alleviate stress by doing everything early.

I agree that it's great so see such a supportive group of girls on this forum. Even in the real world I have seen friends distance themselves after getting engaged themselves because all of a sudden, this becomes a competition. It's really nice to get honest opinions and know they're coming from a good place.

We are leaning heavily towards a donation to the American Cancer Society. Both of us have lost too many loved ones to cancer, I do donate to them on a regular basis ,and they picked up the cost of my grandmothers' chemo treatments when her insurance would no longer cover as much and she could not afford it, and for that I am grateful to them as it got me that much more time with her before she lost her battle. Anybody who has anything to say about that would most likely have something to say about whatever favor I end up giving them as well.

I really think whatever you want to do is what you should do. In my opinion, if you have a cause near and dear to you, those at your wedding should be supportive of it as well.
