Feral Cats

Feral Cats

Does anyone else take care of the cats outside? I have been feeding a few cats that are always in our backyard. One of them is a mom and kitten. None of them have a home, they are very wild.
My question is, does anyone know of a local Trap and Release program? I am not even sure if thats the correct terminology, but what I want is to find somewhere that would spay/ neuter the cats and get them vaccinated for cheap or free? I want to help them, but dont have the $ to take them to a vets office!
Thanks

ETA - I live in N. Woodmere (Nassau)

If you call North Shore Animal League they may be able to do it cheap.

That makes me nervous because I always feel like they will catch them and not give them a home, instead do the 'alternative'

Right thats why I want a trap and release... Like I will trap the cats, bring them in to get some medical help, then return them to their home (my neighborhood).... Some of them are too wild and they def would put them to sleep becuase they could never be placed in a home....
This insures that they cant have any more babies... and they are not spreading diseases.

Ohhhh I totally misunderstood what that meant. Ok, like the guy next door traps squirrels and then brings them to Hempstead Lake Park. I thought you meant something like turning them into the 'authorities'

Re: Feral Cats

We have a large, feral colony in my neighborhood. My FI and I have been working to get some adopted, and those that we can't adopt out, at least get them spayed or neutered.

I don't know of any trap and release programs. But if you want to get them fixed, try Island Rescue in Bay Shore. They will do a spay/neuter plus a rabies shot for $40.

You drop them off in the morning and pick them up in the afternoon (and they are open on Saturdays).

I will give them call.

I know there is a 1 800 number you can call and get a discount coupon sent to you for neutrering and stuff. DH did it with Xena. I will talk to my Mom and ask her if she remembers it.

Re: Feral Cats

we too have about 25 feral cats living in the back of our apt. complex...thing is we cannot afford even $20 to get them spayed as we cant even feed ourselves right now..lol
We called around looking for places willing to donate cages to at least catch them, they are not friendly and we were told each cage requires a $100 deposit...and that will make get us one cat and where would we take them after?

Any help is appreciated on who to call for help with this.....
