The one that he likes has diamonds in it. He works with his hands so I don't want to risk any falling out.

Well if you know what he'd want, I'd say it's ok. But if this will be his every day ring, I'm sure he wants a say it what it looks like. Plus, you'd be giving it to him before you're actually married, which is kind of confusing if he wants to 'show it off.'
