what is something nice I can do for him when he gets home to cheer him up

You sound like me! When my FH had a bad day the other day I was thinking the same thing - maybe I should cook. But then I realized that we'd both be having a bad day!

Take him out for dinner. Give him a massage.

Order in his favorite food and maybe rent a movie that he would really like to see or see what's on-demand.

FH loves it when I watch an action or horror flick with him. He knows I would never watch one on my own.

you don't have to cook all the time time to cook a nice meal. Everyone is capable of it, trust me! You should surprise with a nice meal and some nookie.
