I knew Roz was “the one” after about a year and a half of being together. We are now together over 6 years and due to be married in April 2010. Why such a long delay between when I knew it and when we will be married? That is exactly the reason why I knew she was the one. Roz was always (usually always J) very patient and understanding woman. Not only was Roz empathetic to me living with my mom and supporting the household financially, but she unconditionally supported me through a variety of challenging times. Between massive fallouts with former friends, to leaving a dead end job to pursue a career – she was always willing to listen, provide support and even rub my shoulders after a hectic day. She was always willing to try new things based on my input – she tore down the barrier between her and Indian food and even cared enough to share my passion of fishing by going on a boat for the first time with me. Even more important is that while I consider myself to be a generous person and probably went overboard with gifts on her birthday and Christmas, she never wavered on the fact that our relationship was bound by emotion, respect and love – not what was inside a giftwrapped box which made me realize she was in no way superficial. So between her empathy, respect, support and frugality, I knew she was the one.
So, why nearly 4 years from when I knew she was the one until we got engaged? Roz and I had talked about where we wanted to be down the road. We knew we wanted a house together and thought it would be best to have a house so that when we became engaged and eventually married, we could easily make it a “home”. So once we agreed on pursuing a home first rather than get married and live at my mom’s while we looked for a house, the normal series of events transpired. We saved, looked, and eventually bought our home in May 2008. By the time we had moved in and got settled, I knew it was time to pull the trigger. We had accomplished what we had set out to do so now it was time for me to do what I knew I wanted to do – get engaged. She was in no way pressuring me to do so, which made it even more special. Last Thanksgiving we were engaged, and our life together has continued to blossom since.
