FH is upgrading my engagement ring-- I need advice **White gold or platinum?**
Original post by kat74
FH is wonderful--- he purposely bought me a plain solitaire white gold ring with the intentions that I would upgrade it to the style I liked. he didn't want to pick wrong.... So the time has come & he wants to get it for me as a Christmas gift... I picked out what I wanted but my dilema is---
White gold or platinum?
The platinum ring costs $600 more.... Should I ask him to spend that on top of what he's going to spend for white gold & diamonds?
Is there REALLY much of diiference?
I ask b/c its not just the $600 difference now, but when we buy the wedding band I'm sure it will be at least that much more for platinum then too!

My FH is a jewler and my ring is white gold so that should tell you something?!?!?!?!? Platinum is a preference.
I agree my friends who got platinum have rings that warp and bend, white gold keeps its shape. That's what I have and my diamonds have never fallen out or anything. But it is a preference.

I would say white gold
I know platinum is VERY nice and all, but there are some drawbacks...white gold holds diamonds better because it is a heavier metal also it won't scratch.
Good luck!!

I have my grandmother's enagement & wedding bands from the 1930's...both platinum and still look and wear wonderfully...
I also have a wide band white gold & diamond ring from H. Stern that is about 4 years old and it now has a slight yellow tint to it from wearing it everyday...
My e-ring & wedding band are platinum, just because I prefer the consistency of the coloring over the years...and i wanted antique style like my grandma's and platinum.
I've heard both arguments from jewelers as to which is better & why...

I say white gold too. My FH's aunt is in the jewelry biz, and I keep hearing the same things about platinum. (it scratches, doesn't keep its shine as well etc.)

DEFINITELY the platinum. Platinum is the strongest metal, which is why they use it in the first place. THe diamond is SAFER in a platinum setting than it is in WG Nobody can tell by looking at it, and its not for aesthetic reasons. Its for the protection of your diamond. Of course it is a matter of budget, but if you can, definitely go for the platinum.

when u get a platinum ring u have a choice whether or not to rhodium dip it...most platinum is automatically rhodium dipped. White gold is also rhodium dipped, therefore, both rings will LOOK the same when u get it. Platinum, when scrathed, displaces, whereas gold wears off. My concern was that when my rhodium wore off, did I want the ring to be yellowish or white?? I think the yellow tint takes away from the diamond, so I went for platinum. I do wear a white gold band on my right hand that I've had for years, and in comparing the two, its not THAT much diff, but u CAN see a yellow tint to it. Either way you would have to re-rhodium dip either the white gold or the platinum, if u want that shiny look. If not platinum has that dull gray look and white gold has a yellow tint to it. My platinum engagement ring is a little more scratched than my white gold band, but I am more into the color of the ring, since my jeweler will repolish it for free. Either way, you'll have a beautiful ring!!

if we are talking about the type of metal. then platinim is 'better' I ersonally do not likeit. The saftye of the diamond is not the same in a platinum ring cuz its a softer metal and it bend easier. the prongs bend much easier and I can even tell u how easy it scratches. u will have to get it polished every couple of months so that it can be shiny and not dulled with scratches. I say go white gold
I agree..

fh made my ring plat because the last ring he got me was white gold and the main stone had to be replaced twice. The white gold was too soft and the post broke. I didn't realise it broke and the stone fell out. After I lost the second stone he had to have the posts switched to yellow gold so it became a 2 tone ring. Long story short I have had my plat e ring for over a year and the stone is safe and sound and my ring is still shiny ETA: if you get the plat make sure the ring fits right because unlike gold it will not distort or stretch to fit to your finger. Plat is stronger than gold so it will keep its round shape.

I definitely say platinum. I have a ring that is white gold, and it has turned a hint of yellow over the years, so I need to have it redipped. This other ring is only about 5 years old...and since I plan on wearing my wedding rings for the rest of my life, that would be a lot of redipping!

I'd go with platinum.. I have had my white gold ring a year and I had to have it repolished already
