So, FH just called me and I asked what he ate today- he said: “Nothing, from now on, I’m just eating dinner.” He has been trying to lose weight-he belongs to a gym and he goes 3x a week and he also does jujitsu 2x a week. He said he lost a ton of weight years ago by not eating breakfast or lunch, but I really think this is dangerous. I know a lot of you girlies are really knowledgeable about issues, so please: what can I tell him that will make him see that this is not the way to do things? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Re: FH problem-need advice please!!
its definitely not healthy to only eat dinner... if he is hell bent on going that route.. breakfast and lunch are the meals he should be eating...
especially if he goes to the gym... he shouldnt be eating one meal a day...

Re: FH problem-need advice please!!
strange cause my FH said this morning that he's not eating breakfast anymore
well actually eating only dinner is kinda pointless, cause he doesnt gives enough time for everything to digest in time before going to sleep. so it might not work as well. plus as we get older the metabolism doesnt work as well, so somethig that worked for him yrs ago when he was younger might backfire today. really not recommended way of losing weight, we need vitamins and 'fuel' for our bodies if he wants to lose weight he needs to do portion control, which is what I do along with eating healthier things and less of greesy stuff very dangerous what he decided to do

he might lose the weight but develop other health problems. for a while i was skipping meal and i actually developed gastritis which can ultimately lead to an ulcer so he definitely should be careful.

Re: FH problem-need advice please!!
I hate when my fh only eats dinner but thats because hes too busy during the day to take a break to eat. If i dont I would faint. i say his car wouldnt run without gas-why does fh think not eating would be a good thing?

no, this is def a bad idea.... cuz he probably will lose weight if he only eats dinner cu hes like starving lol, but as soon as he starts eating lunch/breakfast again the pounds will pack righton just as fast as he lose them
me and fh walk.... a lot!! and its actually better for you in that you do less damage to your body (knees, ankles etc)

ITA!! This is how both my FH and I have lost weight successfully! You need breakfast for your daily energy.

Agree... I find this is only way to keep you satisfied and keep your metabloism up, which is what ultimately will help shed those pounds during workouts.

Re: FH problem-need advice please!!
This is a long post! Sorry but I want to help :) OK, clearly, this is unhealthy. Men have a different metabolism than we do. They need more food in order to fuction. He can't do that without harming himself. He can suffer some side effects from that too, like fainting, problems with going to the bathroom, and the main thing that affects most guys egos: MUSCLE LOST. They will get flabby, they will look unhealthy and above all, skin is the hardest thing to tighten up.
If you wants to diet right, he needs to write down currently what he is eating per week, and if he can include caloric count that would help too. Once he sees what he is eating and how many cals he consumes, than he can determine what is a healthy diet for himself.
I can give you 'diet' but make sure he researches or better yet, seeks professional dieting advice from a nutrionist or trainer. My brother is a trainer too, and I can ask him what he could do...
Breakfast: Oatmeal *1/2 or 1 cup of oatmeal with walnuts and berries Herbal tea (no reg tea or coffee) OR EGG WHITES with tons of veggies. Skip the bread. For a guy, like my FH, he eats like 5 eggwhites or more. Sometimes its 3 eggwhites with 2 full eggs. OR Kashi Go Lean with fat free SOY milk
NO dairy. NO fat. NO FRY! NO BLEACHED WHITES(pasta, white bread. Think multi grain)!
Lunch: Sandwich or Salad. Include a major protien (chicken, turkey, fish, tofu) Avoid Red meats (2 times per week ONLY) and Pork (hard to digest). So lunch is PROTIEN Veggie 1 part carb if any ( do a multi grain bread low in sugar and cal) You can even do a left over dinner with BROWN rice.
Dinner: PROTIEN and Veggies. Go nuts on the veggies.
Easy on the condiments and WATCH SALT AND SUGAR INTAKE
Snacks: Fruit, esp APPLES and High fiber fruits NUTS Peanut or Almond butter (serving size only) All the veggies he wants Tell him to stop eating after 8pm, even 7! And no more soda, BEER, or carbo drinks. WATER!!!
He can also go to GNC and talk to a supplement guy. That way they can get him on a regiman of supplements and Vitamins ( like a multi, CLA for lean muscle, etc) to get him results and maintain a masculine profile.
The next thing is workout. I strongly suggest one work out session with a trainer to learn a work out and stick to it. They say that people need to do cardio 4-6 times a week for results. I agree. 20-30 a day AFTER strength will get him to his goals the fastest.
Look, if he is still being a the way he is about dieting, let me know, and I will fm you my Brothers number so you can talk to him and get a Personal trainers advice on what to do. I'm an advocate for healthy eating and working out. I've had bad experiences growing up and I feel it neccesary to help others make wise choices. HTH, good luck! Keep us posted.

Re: FH problem-need advice please!!
FH did that and didn't lose any weight. Your metabolism stops working properly when you don't eat. My FH is doing portion control like I am and has lost almost 20 pounds.

Does he need to lose any more weight? honestly you know him the best, but any sort of crash diet is going to be dangerous and can have permanent repercussions. Maybe you can sit him down and have a 'serious talk' with him? Tell him you're concerned that he's not dieting healthfully and you just want him to look (and be) healthy for the wedding.

This is a really bad idea. After doing this for about a week he's going to crash. He won't be able to keep it up!
I just got FH P90X for his birthday and the nutrition program that comes with it tells you to eat 500-1,000 MORE calories per day!!
I hope he realizes before he faints at the gym or something!

Re: FH problem-need advice please!!
whats wrong with weight watchers?
also tell him to bike ride. 1 hour a day.. on a real bike. not stationary. he'll tone his whole body and drop weight.

Re: FH problem-need advice please!!
I'll tell your FH the same thing I tell my members:
YOU MUST EAT TO LOSE! Think of your body like a car. You need fuel for the car to burn or else it stops. Our bodies are the same.....our bodies need fuel to run and burn or else they stop.
It sounds counter-intuitive, but like the other girls said, his metabolism will slow down and he won't lose anything after the initial shock to his body. Besides that, the second he starts eating again, any weight he loses will come right back on.
Has he considered weight watchers? I'd be more than willing to have him come to one of my meetings and speak with him.

Re: FH problem-need advice please!!
you should let him know that eating small meals throughout the day will really keep his metablolism up, thus burning more calories. Tell him to try eating every 2-3 hrs something healthy like a few slices of turkey, a veggie or piece of fruit...

Re: FH problem-need advice please!!
ITA with everything everyone has said....
If he doesnt eat bfast and lunch, we will lose weight- because he's eating less.
However when he starts eating again (and he will, because you have to eventually), he'll gain it back plus more.
ETA: Maybe suggest a nutritionist? Then he can lose weight, but not in a way that will hurt his body.

Re: FH problem-need advice please!!
Get him to a nutritionist ASAP....if he wants a healthy eating plan, he needs to go about it the right way. Like everyone else has said, he can develop major health problems and also skipping meals is known to actually cause weight gain, not reduce weight.
