fh's last name battle

so i'm aware that most people would refer to us as the 'Cholewas' (fh's last name..i cant even pronounce it)
anyway i really really really dont want to change my last name....i love my name.
if i choose to hyphenate it, what personal documents are affected? my SS card, passport, license? is that it?
do i need to use it legally? at work, credit cards?

oh and do i need to make a decision by the time we get our marriage license?

fh and i are fighting abt this...imho he only cares bc of his fam...his dad made a comment as to why the phone was under my name (my last name came up on his caller id...)

maybe bc i pay the bill....grrrr i hate when they get all up in our biz...

I know how you feel I love my last name, Fh friend even joked that FH should change his last name to mine- lol, I will change my name after the wedding My mother told my I should use her maiden name which starts with any S just like Fh lol which I did suggest to Fh, they have nobody to carry her family name on :(

I'm actually not hyphenating. Mine will be Danielle Kerensky Pratt. My legal docs will have the Kerensky Pratt but I am keeping Kerensky for business.

from my understanding if you change your name with Social Security all of your other documents have to match it. i think the only thing you can leave with your maiden name are credit cards. i am not 100% sure, but i think this is the correct info.

Is Kerensky fh's last name or yours?

Don't quote me on this but I think I remember hearing from here that you can no longer use your maiden name as your 'middle' anymore....it used to be allowed but not anymore. You have to hyphenate it if you want to use yours and his.

I am having the same issue my last name is three letters long, and everyone calls me by my last name, so it's going to completely throw me off... and soon my name will sound like it will rhyme... don't even get me started LOL

Per NY state:

One or both parties to a marriage may elect to change the surname by which he or she wishes to be known after the marriage by entering the new name in the appropriate space provided on the marriage license. The new name must consist of one of the following options:

the surname of the other spouse;
any former surname of either spouse;
a name combining into a single surname all or a segment of the premarriage surname or any former surname of each spouse;
a combination name separated by a hyphen, provided that each part of such combination surname is the premarriage surname, or any former surname, of each of the spouses.

Hmm in Polish tradition, the bride needs to take groom's last name... maybe this is the reason why his father kind of say something to you.. Think about your future children- they will ask mommy why don't you have the same last name as daddy ??

I feel like I will be a different person with a different last name but we are starting our family so there needs to be changes :)

Just FYI, you can change your name to whatever you want as long as you go through the name change process. You can certainly use your last name as your middle name, which is what I plan to do. You just have to go through a longer process, then the simple changing your name because of marriage.

I think this may be the route we'll take.
What are you going to do w/all your docs? change them to match your new name?

I am just saying from Polish culture point :) and I can relate to your FH's family 'thinking' about last name
Of course you should do whatever you feel like doing :)

Re: fh's last name battle

If you get your marriage license in the 5 boroughs, you fill out the form online before you go in there to sign the papers together.

We did ours in Brooklyn. I put a space between my maiden name and last name and made that my 'new surname' -- no hyphen needed. They approved it, and on my marriage certificate, it says 'new surname' as MAIDEN NEW and I love it.

Yes, I have four names now, but I liken my new last name to someone with a name with a space in it, like De Leon or Van Dam.

I just use DH's last name for the most part, but my new driver's license and SS Card have all four names (FIRST MIDDLE LASTMAIDEN LASTNEW) and it's extremely convenient.

In NY State, you can use whatever name you want as long as you are not trying to defraud people by using it and are consistent. It doesn't 'legally' change your name unless you do it on your marriage license/certificate, so your SS card will have to say what your legal name is (and your W2s must match) but you can still use his last name or your maiden one if you want to do so unofficially.

HTH!
