Fifthy and Sixthy

Fifthy and Sixthy

I noticed the other day that DH wrote a check for 'Fifthy' dollars. I said 'hon you spelt fifty wrong'. NOw he's telling me that it's correct, that in Ireland (and in the UK) it's spelt 'fifthy', 'sixthy', 'seventhy' etc.

I did a google search and he might be right but maybe alot of people just spell it wrong.

Anyone know? Is it like the 'color/colour' thing????

I never noticed this until just now. I will have to check with my sister when I call her tonight. I spell colour not color & favour not favor.

I've never heard of this, and I am a serious grammar/spelling nerd. Sounds plausible, though!

Please do let me know so I can show DH because we now have a $10 bet going.

It might be a regional thing, and to be honest, it sounds welsh, not Irish or English...let me get you a definite answer.

Sorry, but according to the 5 different UK dictionaries I consulted, this is not an acceptable spelling. I also checked Gaelic (Scot's & Irish) and Welsh.

It's probably a 'DH can't spell' thing

It was so funny because I kept saying to him 'spell fifty' all weekend because it just made me laugh. A few times he feel for it and spelt it (with the H).

Poor guy. I tease him so bad sometimes!

Don't be sorry - I won my bet!

Which dictionaries did you consult? Thank you for looking - I should have looked myself, some librarian I am.

I did a search on ask.com and typed in 'UK dictionaries' ; 'Gaelic Dictionaries' 'Irish Dictionaries' 'Welsh Dictionaries' Scot's Dictionaries'

It's definitely the way the Irish (at least my family) pronounce these numbers, but I've always seen them spelled traditionally

DH doesn't. In fact alot of TH sounds he pronouces with a hard T, I've noticed.

One thing about Irish pronounciation that caught me off guard, is when he spells somethuing out to someone for whatever reason, and there's an A in the word, he says 'Ah' instead of an hard 'A' sound. Took me a few times to realize what he meant.
