Im having trouble finalizing the guest list. So far I have a list of 168 for a reception that I want to strictly keep at 125-135. Now here's the sticky situation. If I were to eliminate people that are not in a serious relationship (also known as the 'and guest') I would save myself close to 15 people. But I also have OOT guests that Im relatively sure will be bring a 'guest' with them. Some are even flying from another coutnry. Should I eliminate the 'guest option - or shell out the exta dough? I dont want to be unfair and say that only oot guests can bring someone. I kinda know the answer all ready, by writing this, but I'd like to hear everyone else's take on this.....

Re: Finalizing guest list......
Well, how much do your single friends know each other? all our singles are pretty much into the same things and know each other already, so eliminating their guests wasn't so much of a problem. But one of them doesn't know anyone - that person I allowed a guest.
I'm not overly concerned about being fair - if the singles ask and they're my friends, I just say that we're conserving space. If they don't know the person I allowed a guest, then it shouldn't matter that I did, because how are they gonna know? And if they find out, I'd tell the truth.

Re: Finalizing guest list......
PErsonally I would send it out with the 168 and hopefully some of these people wont come... I think they said the % is 18-25 reply no. 18% of the 168 is 30 people responding no so you would only be 3 people over and that is in a perfect world. I think that anyone that is invited should be invited with a guest weither or not they are in a serious relationship or not. Who are you to judge how serious someone is?? Let them make the call as to if they want to bring that person or not.

honestly...even if they are not in a serious relationship, it's 'proper' etiquette for anyone over the age of 18 (even 16) to be invited with 'a guest'.....we did and many are coming alone....some are bringing friends of the same sex.....

I agree, I would keep the 'guest' option

Athough it may be proper etiquette, I am not gonna pay $100 bucks for my cousin to bring a friend just bc he's 18. I personally don't want people bringing a friend just for the sake of bringing someone. JMO
I say do what's best for your and FH. If your budget allows for the extra guests then by all means invite them. If you have to take cut the list then the guests of people who are not significant others should be eliminated.

Exactly how I feel. My FH and I have been arguing about this because he is the Capt of the Fire Dept. There are some people who he wants to invite and we are debating whether or not with guests. Being that they all know each other, and will be sitting together, if someone isn't in a significant relationship - I don't need to invite them with a guest so they can just bring another member of the fire dept as a friend and because that person wants to go to the Captain's wedding!

Completely agree here. There's always someone else I'd want there instead of some perfect stranger who, more often than not, I will never see again. I'm doing anyone in a serious relationship at the time we send out the save the date cards.

i don't think this is true, shana...i've read differently...even if i hadn't...i'm not inviting people with guests unless they're in a relationship..i don't want strangers at my wedding...i dont' want FH's friends showing up with some skank they located in their little black book AND...i don't want friends bringing 'friends' just for the sake of not coming alone.

Re: Finalizing guest list......
Brides I've spoken to, whose list have been longer than the actual number that their hall can accomodate, have said that they have had an 'A' list and 'B' list. That as soon as they have received RSVPs from guests who cannot attend, they have then sent out invitations to the guests on their other list. Of course this is something that one does not share with a lot of people and in regards to etiquette, I'm sure it's not, but it is one way of making sure that everyone who is suppose to receive an invitation receives one. Anyone else thought of doing this?

From 168 to 135 you definitely need to start cutting people. Even if you save yourself those 15 people you are still not that close to figure you want.

Same here...i don't want to invite a guest for my 19 year old cousin who really wouldn't even want to be at my wedding and i doubt will even give a gift, not like that is the point, but i am not in the position to spend close to 200 bucks on two people who really don't care to be there, therefore, she is not getting a guest. i don't mean to sound rude, but i'd rather spend the money on someone who will enjoy being at my wedding than someone who i don't know and will probably just make fun of the day afterwards.

Re: Finalizing guest list......
Oops, I have a whole slew of people I wouldnt have thought to inivite. So now instead of inviting the family of four - I have to invite their bf and gf's too. I didnt even realize that!! I was just thinking of my single friends. Someone mentioned a 'B' list which I all ready have. That's why Im kinda up in the air about 'and guests'. I know there will be people that will honestly bring a date and there are people that will bring someone for the hell of it. But is it really my decision to say, 'well one friend can bring a guest, but the another friend cant bring a guest'? That's what Im stuck on........

It's your wedding and you can do whateva the heck you want to do! If you decide to let some people bring guests and tell others they can't then they have no right to question you.
Good Luck bc I know it's tough

Re: Finalizing guest list......
I spoke to all of my early 20 something cousins and they decided to only bring a date if they have been dating someone for a while. This is the first 'family' wedding and I think they will have plenty of fun. And they agreed! So, my point is, talk to a few of guests who are close to you and just ask them! It cut over 8 people from my list!

Re: Finalizing guest list......
We had about 180 on our final guest list and ended up with 136 so you may be fine with the list the way it is.
We did invite all of our guests with the option to bring a guest. It was of paramount importance tous that our guests enjoyed themselves (which was part of the point of the party) and to us that meant giving them the option to bring a guest. About half of our single guests brought a date/friend.

Re: Finalizing guest list......
I say that if you know a fam member that is in a serious relationship with someone, they should bring that person. For example, both my FBIL's are not in relationships and therefore we are not inviting 'FBIL & guest' to the E-party. Different circumstance I know but you know what I mean, right?
