Hmm I was offered a job as a buyer for Polo out of college--I had submitted my resume at some fair or something. I had no experience in retail. It was good money, but a lot of travel.

Most high-end stores will require you to have decent retail experience. I used to work at Versace and I was actually recruited by my manager while I was working at Bloomingdales. And most high-end stores will only hire full-time employees. I'm sure you already know this, but be prepared to deal with some snotty rich people! lol!

Do you want to be a Sales Associate or work for Corporate?
Where are you considering? Small designer boutiques or department stores? I'd say submit an application to Saks, Henri Bendel, or Bergdorf Goodman to start.

I've worked in corporate retail since I've been out of school. You don't start as a buyer- you could start as an assistant buyer somewhere. You could also work on the planning/allocating (actually getting the product to the stores and tracking its sales) side of the business at corporate. Most retailers look a lot for allocators because the turnover rate is high.
It's a very fun field- but also very time consuming and stressful. There is a lot of $$ to be made at the top....

I went to FIT to be a buyer....I now work in retail, but I work in IT. Do you want to work in a store or in corporate? Do you want to travel to the city or only looking for LI?

when i was going to work as management at Nicole Miller i found an ad on Craigslist of all places!
just go to the stores with your resume. they are hard to get into. I tried at Gucci & Prada, but they werent hiring.
Try looking on WWD.com. Womenswear Daliy. They have classified ads on there for importers and designers.WWD.com
