FINISHED LOVELY BONES. (Ending mentioned!)

Hi Ladies,

I'm almost finished with the Lovely Bones. I just read the part last night where she comes back in Ruth's body and makes love to Ray. Talk about a tearjerker!!!

I know a lot of people say they liked the first half of the book, and then didn't like the second. I haven't finished it yet, but so far I've been enjoying it all the way through.

Any opinions about why you didn't like the second half??

Don't tell me the end yet!!

I was disappointed that she came back only to Ray and not to her family that needed it more. It also seemed strange to me that she would waste her one moment on earth having sex when her only previous experience with sex was a violent one.

In my mind she didn't age or grow older in 'heaven' so she seemed rather young to have matured enough to get past the violence.

Some others thought maybe she grew along with her sister and wanted to experience the love she never had, but that wan't my impression.

and I didn't like the very end, but I won't go into that yet.

Hi Lisa,

It crossed my mind too, that she came back to Ray and not her family, and I wondered why. But I think there was very little choice in the matter on her part. She opened her eyes and there was Ray, standing over her. She went with the feelings of the moment, the very PHYSICAL feelings, something she had such a limited time to experience. She knew she only had a short time before she'd be back in Heaven. I wonder how many of us, given the opportunity, would return to a lover (DH included!) instead of our families...

I also think the fact that she came back to Ray will have life-altering effects on both Ray and Ruth, maybe even a more profound effect than she would have had on her own family.

I can't say I agree that she 'wasted' a moment on earth having sex when her only experience was violent. Maybe that's WHY she chose to have sex that was loving and gentle, in an attempt to heal that part of her that was violated, and understand and know what physical love is supposed to be like.

And part of me thinks that her family was just starting to heal, just starting to pick up the pieces, and maybe her returning to them would have thrown everything out of whack again.

She DID try to call them, but it was too late.

I'm probably going to finish the book tonight. I'll let you know what I think about the ending!

I guess I have her frozen in time at the age she was killed, and I didn't find her able to come to those mature realizations at that age.

And Ray wasn't her lover until she came back. He was just someone she had a crush on at a very young age. I can't compare that to coming back to your husband.

Guess what makes it a good book is the differing opinions!

Very true! Maybe by tonight when I finish it, I'll hate it! LOL.

I finished it last night.

I can't say I LOVED the ending, it was okay. I'm not sure how I expected it to end. Basically, I think everyone healed in their own way and life went on, even Susie.

I was definitely surprised by what happened to Mr. Harvey, though!

I also thought it was a bit odd that she hadn't seen her grandmother in Heaven yet, and she passed away a few years ago already. But I definitely like the idea of everyone getting their 'own' Heaven. After all, what might be heaven to me, might be someone else's nightmare!

At the end of my book (audiobook) was an interview with the author. Did you know she was raped in a tunnel at the age of 18? And in the SAME tunnel another girl had been raped and murdered before her? She thinks that's where the character Susie came from. It was a very interesting interview!

Any thoughts on the ending??

I wanted Mr. Harvey to die in some horrific way...the icicle thing seemed very strange and unjust.

I didn't want Mr. Harvey to die at ALL. I wanted him caught and locked away forever.

I also wanted them to find her bones. I kept waiting for her body to be found.

exactly Karen! I wanted them to find her - they were so close, they just kind of teased you with the idea of finding her.

And I hated the icicle thing - I thought that was pretty lame. I was ok with not having a nicely wrapped up story, but death by icicle and no one will ever know? BAD!

I really hated this book...I really didn't liek her writing style...

I know there are sexually active 14 year olds...but most are not...I think her choice to go to Ray was pitiful...

Just wanted to add my $.02. I agree 100% with Lisa and Erica. For me, this book had such promise in the beginning and then it just became plain silly. The love affair with Ray, the ending...nonsense.
