I am just not into that...i am worried. I think this is just tooo dangerous...Look at all the casualties lately
What does everyone else think?

Re: Firemen
my dh was a volunteer in valley stream for like 11 years untill we moved to levittown and he just doesnt have the time with work. i actually worrried more about him going into fires then i did with him going to his regular job and he is a cop. but they do get trained well but volunteer and fdny and they have a great sense of family with firefighters. i think that if it is something you dh wants to try then you should support him. her might hate it

my fbil is a fireman in bklyn and my other fbil is a volunteer for farmingdale. i say that yes it is inherently dangerous - but they are trained to handle different situations.

If he was really serious about it, I'd support him.

Re: Firemen
It was just a discussion...I would support him if he chose to persue it...
But i do feel that it is a dangerous job and i know i would be worried everytime he left the house

You do worry (I know I do)! FH is a volunteer FF and right now I am more pissed off at plans always being late - dinner is ruined now because it already started cooking and he has been at a fire call for an hour!

Re: Firemen
We watched Ladder 49 last night. After watching that I can't even imagine worrying like that about DH every day. I would support him if he wanted to be a cop or fireman, but I would worry constantly.

I agree 100% with this.. while I never doubted how difficult the job of a firefighter is (esp. after 9/11).. and I always realized how tough it is on their wives and children.. until we also watched that movie last night, I have to say that it just drove reality home for me
I worry about my husband driving 2+ hours everyday as it is (yes I'm a worrier!) So if I had to live my life worrying everytime my husband was late coming home, well it would tear me apart .. but in the same breath, I think we all want our husbands and future husbands to really follow their dreams and pursue what career interest them, and of course if my husband truly wanted this I would have to support him
so its just a tough dilemma

I know, how you feel Jen, my dh has also caught interest in being a cop and it would worry me terribly.

Re: Firemen
I dated a cop once and my mom hated it. Most cops can go a whole career and NEVER even draw their guns but that wasnt enough for her.
The truth of the matter is that there is a lot of honor involved with careers where people put their lives on the line. I would be frightened but proud if FH decided to do something like that. You have to follow your heart and consider it a calling if he does. Think about it this way, wouldnt you feel safe knowing that a level-headed person such as the FH's and DH's here would be serving and protecting? I would.

My DH is a FDNY fireman. Is it scary? Yeah, but you just can't think about it, otherwise you will drive yourself nuts. I can honestly say he loves his job more than anyone I've ever met. Some people can't handle their husbands being firemen, but I grew up with my father as a cop, so I'm used to that lifestyle. Plus, he's so happy I can't imagine him doing anything else.

Re: Firemen
My dad was a volunteer fireman and when I was little, I used to cry when he went on calls because I always had a fear he would not come back. My fear was so bad of fires that they gave me the ladder to put in my bedroom incase there was a fire.
He winded up quitting because I think of me.

Re: Firemen
DH is a paid firefighter for almost 10 years. I can tell you this, if it makes him happy, it will make you happy. Yes, it can be a dangerous job. My mother asked him if I worry about him all of the time. Honestly, no I don't. DH works 24 hour shifts and sometimes they run so many calls I won't hear from him all day. It is just part of the job. But I also know that DH has had some of the BEST training out there (Hazmat, collasped rescue, confined space rescue, etc.) that he knows what he is doing. If they are not running calls, then they are training. He is not going to take unnecessary risks. And if something happens to him, then that was God's plan, and there is nothing I can do about it. He is happy going to work everyday, and that is alot more than I can say for other people I know who have desk jobs and hate it.

Brian's sister's husband is with the FDNY and it is definitely an adjustment in terms of lifestyle. I give her credit with 3 kids, I know I couldn't live that lifestyle and anyone who can in my eyes is amazing!
Why not encourage him to become a volunteer in the local department so that he can see how he likes it?

Re: Firemen
I would worry too and would rather he not do it, but at the same time, I have a tremendous amount of respect for FF's.
