I have my first interview after being married...It's a phone interview, but if successful, I'll be called in for an in-person interview.
So, would you wear your wedding ring? Given my age and marital status, I think some may assume I'll be having kids soon (I'm not planning on it in the near future). I know it's illegal to discriminate on the basis of sex or marital status, but I also know from having sat on hiring committees that if they want to get rid of you for that reason they can find another reason. I'm thinking of not wearing the ring...Thoughts?

Me too. I feel naked without & I know naked is not a good way to start an interview!
ETA-- it would probably come up anyway for me , that I am married, b/c if they ask for references, I'd have to tell them that I was known by my maiden name in my previous job.

Maybe I'm just paranoid. I just know people where I work now have not been hired if they are in the crucial birthing years and married.

Much to DH's dismay I have yet to change my name...

I think the fact that your are continuing study to earn your latest degree would lead me to believe, the birthing years are still in the future for you ... at least until your studies are completed. At elast that's what I'd assume as a hiring mgr.

Re: First married interview....
I don't think I would wear mine, but my field is heavily male oriented and women I have talked to about family/work balance say that their employers didn't really cut much slack when it came to child care issues.
And maybe it is just me who thinks this, but if I were going to wear it, I would just wear the plain band. I think people make assumptions about your financial status when they see E-rings. If I am negotiating salary, I don't want them thinking about that.

Wear it with pride!! I wore my engagement ring when I was interviewing for a teaching job....I knew that they could possibly look at me and think that I was going to be taking time off for the wedding....but in the end, it didn't matter and I got hired in spite of the e-ring! Hopefully, they'll be looking at your qualifications and listening to how intelligent you are, and not worrying about how many babies you're going to be popping out in the coming years

I have to say it depends on the job you are interviewing for. I used to teach and I wouldn't think twice about wearing it on an interview in a school. Most of my colleagues were married and parents and I think teaching is a more family friendly career. You also often have a union that helps you out with maternity leave, so I don't think administration thinks about hiring a future mom in the same way as other industries. JMO.

Re: First married interview....
When I was working, I was in the marketing field and looking for a job shortly after I was engaged. and did not wear my engagement ring on interviews. After I was married, I was recruited by someone I used to work with who knew I was married so I wore them to that one. But if they didn't know I wouldn't have. The market is too competitive to give someone a reason to disqualify me for something they can't legally ask me about. JMO.

It depends on what field you are interviewing for. I'm in finance and I wouldn't wear my ring to an interview for the reasons you states. It's illegal to discriminate but we all know it happens.

Re: First married interview....
Almost everyone I work with is married. My firm is very family friendly and has work/life balance programs in place. It depends on where you are interviewing. You can find out these things before you interview.
Generally, I would wear my ring. I wouldn't work for a place that would hold that bias.

It's for a state job. I just know in the state job I hold now, there is discrimination against women of child rearing age (because they hired several who left immediately after giving birth and money was lost after months of training them only to find they left a year after starting the position).

Re: First married interview....
Isn't it terrible! We have to hide our marital status! I never told my job I HAD a baby when they hired me. I can tell you they werent happy when I had to take off b/c he had pneumonia.
Anyway, I don't know what I'd do. I'd like to say wear it, and if they arent going to hire you b/c of it then you dont want to work for them anyway... but I know how hard it is out there to find a job!
Good Luck in whatever you decide! Let us know how it goes
