First time

So I went dress shopping for the first time today. I had some pictures of what I liked saved to my iPad to bring with me. Most of the pics were very similar, semi fitted, lace. After around dress 3 I absolutely hated the way I looked in the fitted dresses. They weren't fully fitted but they were fitted on the hips and I just felt like I looked a million times bigger than I really am. So then I ditched the lace and tried on some a-line dresses with organza type bottoms. They weren't as poofy as a princess ball gown but def more poof than I ever envisioned. I felt like those made my waist look much smaller but it just felt like sooo much dress. I dunno. Now I'm super confused. I def didn't love anything but it wasn't even so much the gown, I really can't figure out what 'fit' would be best for my body type. My consultant wasn't much help, she really didn't make many suggestions. I guess I was hoping she would look at my body and say, 'oh I know just the style that would great on you!' I dunno, just venting I guess!! Time to book another appointment!

donna, the owner is just great ... i said i was worried i would like pregnant in a certain kind of dress (NOT really pregnant haha!) and she was like i am so tired of you beautiful girls coming in here and worrying about these things, etc etc. she was so sweet!

if you go to village bridal in babylon, my consultant was krissy - she was super fun and very patient!! she encouraged my MOHs to take photos of me in every dress so that i could decide!

Sorry you didn't have the best experience! I tried on about, if not more than, 20 dresses before I found The Dress, and some girls on here tried on way more than that! I originally went in with one vision but then found that the style I thought I loved didn't look good on me at all. You have to try different ones on and you might be surprised by what you find you love.

I felt the same exact way about the dresses as you (sent you FM)! and i had a terrible experience at bridal reflections- I felt like they pulled awful gowns... I also went to lilette's and loved the experience I got there, but just didn't find anything that caught my eye. They had alot of maggie sottero gowns which was nice because she makes gorgeous lace gowns, but I wanted buttons and not a corset back, which is really hard to find with maggie sottero. Because Lilette's had a large # of gowns by that designer, I really only found like 4 lace gowns in the whole store with buttons on the back.. That was really the only reason I didn't like Lilette's though! They were super nice and accommodating there

I ended up going to quite a few bridal salons! So, I fancy myself an expert :) I have to say, it's not about the store you go to, it's ALL about the consultant. Try Jody at Bridal Reflections in Massapequa, Loreal in Lillette's, or Tracy at Nouveau Bridal in Merrick. These three were my best girls!

I agree.. My consultant today almost seemed bored, lol! I'm just disappointed bc I thought I knew what I wanted but what I wanted looked awful!! It doesn't help that the dresses are like a size 2 and I'm squeezing my size 10 butt into them! Lol

Also try bridal suite of bayshore...so nice and patient and gave great advice for what would look good on my body...I'm a shorty at 5ft and was worried about being swallowed by dresses.

I visited five bridal salons and I had the best experience at Bridal Reflections in Massapequa. My consultant Jody was amazing and knew exactly what would look good for my body type. I didn't go in with a definite vision, and she really helped me figure out what style I like. You should definitely ask your consultant for different styles. From what you are describing, I would suggest trying on modified A-lines or drop waist dresses. I knew i didn't want a fully fitted dress or a ball gown. I had the same problems as you, the fitted gowns made my hips look huge, and I didn't like how i looked in the poofy gowns either. My happy compromise was a modified A-line that is fitted until the waist. So keep an open mind, try on all different styles, and don't settle until you are absolutely certain.

I agree. Be open. Try on one of each style. I was set on 2 dresses one Mermaid one a massive ball gown. I always thought I would choose the Mermaid and I ended up with the major princess ball gown. I felt I definitely needed something ultra sexy in a dress (just my personality and I enjoy wearing curve hugging clothes). So for me I was so halt with my choice! I went to paradise bridal and had a fantastic experience!

I had to keep a really open mind when I went shopping. Through 2 years of being engaged, I kept saying was all I wanted was a v-neck dress with straps. When I put a few on, it made my shoulders look bigger (who knew I had dainty shoulders?) and just didn't look like something I should be wearing. After hating on strapless dresses all that time, I fell in love with one and put down a deposit. Be open to switching it up because if you feel gorgeous, it will be worth it. No matter how hard we try to pick a timeless dress, in ten years they will be out of style. But if you can look back and feel like that was the most beautiful you have ever looked, you'll be happy.

I tried on two dresses that I thought were the ones.. they were on tthe models.. I also at first wanted a lace number but when I put it on it looked like a night gown.. the second dress i liked i tried ot on and loved.. when I brought my mom back I tried it in and hated it!! I ended up going with something very plain because it really helped my figure.. it is rouched at the top so it brings in my hips and brings out my boobs!! LOL I am adding a blingy belt and blingy jewelry and shoes to make it pop.. You will find the dress for you.. My mom ended up going through the book and she actually picked my dress... guess mommy knows best..

Hang in there!! You will definitly find YOUR dress!!

I also had Krissy from Village Bridal and she found me my dress. She was fantastic. The consultant really does make a huge difference and they should be able to help you figure it out if you're uncertain. I'm sorry that where you went you got a consultant that didn't but don't get discouraged! I went to 3 places and tried on about 20 dresses before I committed to one because I wanted to try all types of silhouettes and materials to make sure I was happy and wearing what flattered me best. I know it can be overwhelming and frustrating but there are lots of salons out there with good consultants and lots of beautiful dresses, you will find something that works for you, it just takes a little time sometimes!

Re: First time

Which BR did you go to? I had a bad experience in Massapequa but a great on in Carle Place, that's where I ended up finding my dress. I worked with Lisa who was great.

I also loved the consultants at Lilettes and thought they were really nice, they just didn't have 'my dress' there.

DONT GET DISCOURAGED!! It took me 5-6 salons and MANY dresses before finding the one. Have you tried fit and flare style?
