Flatware/place settings

Flatware/place settings

Did you register for both everyday flatware and special occasion flatware?
How much do they cost?
Did you register for a specific number of place setting for special occasion flatware or just a more expensive set?

We registered for 2 of the same set of flatware (for 16 sets) but it just occurred to me that there would be no 'fine dining' flatware to go with the 'fine china'. Most fine china is by the place setting.

Sorry I know these are weird questions...just wondering what I'm going to put in the flatware chest that we registered for if we use the flatware everyday?!?!

Re: Flatware...

We have 2 sets of flatware. One is an 'everyday' set I got from Costco when I moved into my apartment -- I really love the way it looks and feels in my hand, so I didn't feel the need to replace it. It's only 2 years old. I think it was ~ $60 for the whole set. I think it is 12 pl settings + seving utensils but I'm not sure?

I thought sterling was way too expensive, and too much of a hassle w/ respect to polishing, so we didnt register for very formal silverware. We looked at a lot of patterns in stainless at Fortunoff but nothing wowed me, so we didnt register for any and wasnt planning to. Then when we were in Macy's I saw a Lenox 65 pc set (12 place settings + 5 serving pieces) that included a caddy for them to sit in. It was $150 ('orig price' $285 but it's usually $149.99). We both liked it, so it worked. I didn't want to register for expensive place settings of flatware (many are $40-50 a setting and up) because there are other things I wanted more.

We got it as an engagement gift and it's great -- right now we use the first set as our 'everyday' silverware but when we run out of forks or spoons we will use the other set. it's a little fancier, so when we have used our china we used the Lenox silverware. The tongs (?) on the fork are closer together on the Lenox set so it's a little harder to eat with though.

Hope that helps...

as for storage, we didnt register for a 'flatware chest' because we have 2 shallow drawers that pull out, and each set has its own drawer. it's easier for us this way.

What are you thinking about doing? Did you find a set you liked?

we registered for these kate spade ones. Its a 5 piece place setting so we asked for 4. Its a bit on the pricey side but we hope whoever buys it for us uses the 20% off bed bath and beyond coupon

Re: Flatware/place settings

Because our china is pretty ornate we wanted something pretty basic so we chose these for special occasion:

and then these for everyday since our everyday dishes are a little on the plain side:

i already have everyday flatware, so we only registered for 'good' flatware

We went with the Lenox Vintage Platinum flatware...16 settings (we registered for 16 settings of everything)...they normally cost $90 per setting, but they go on sale often for $49.99 each. Even better, however, is that if you catch a good sale on Macys, this particular style is buy 1 get one free, or buy 2 get 1 free. Last month, they were buy 3 get 1 free plus get a free flatware chest.

I like them both! The second one definitely looks more 'special occasion' to me though, but I understand your reasoning for pairing them the way you did. I would probably do the reverse though, with the more delicate flatware with the fine china and the more substantial flatware with the everyday dishes. The cool thing about flatware is you can mix and match how you use them. Either way, very pretty

Oh thank you!
I agree with the flatware now that you mention it...I just liked both so I figure I will use both!

Did you choose a formal china?

We chose Venetian Lace by Lenox -- FH actually really likes it too. I have some pictures in my registry album. We actually received almost all of it as engagement gifts, and have used it 2 or 3 times so far. Still have a few pieces to go .. maybe shower gifts?

I love yours too though!

Re: Flatware/place settings

We registered for both fine and everyday flatware.
My everyday flatware came in a set it is like $199 or maybe less, but you get eveything inlcuding the hostess set. My fine was about $49 a place setting. I registered for the amount of place settings that they suggest you register for.
