Flex Time

Flex Time

Does your company offer it?
Do you use it
Are there any core hours, if so what are they?

Do you view Flex Time as a positive employee benefit?

Thanks for your responses

Re: Flex Time

Hi Fran...

My sister has flex hours on the honor system. She loves it. 3 days of the week, she goes in 7:30 to 4 and the other 2, she works like 9:00 to 5:30 or so. She does say that alot of people in her office take advantage...coming in around 9:30 and leaving at 4...taking really long lunch breaks, etc. My company is small and would never offer flex hours, but they are very fair with time off needed and such. When my daughter started school full time, I cut my hours here so I don't need to leave her in after care for to long. My boss was very understanding and I will work longer in any given day if needed.

Re: Flex Time

My company offers flex time. I used it when I was in graduate school part time and I wanted to take early classes. I would work late on certain days and leave early on the days I had class. I had to sign a contract saying what my new hours would be.

My company also offers a compressed workweek where you can fit you 35 or 40 hours into four days and not work on the fifth day.

We also have telecommuting where you can work from home on occasion.

I think flex time is a positive employee benefit. As long as I get my work done and work the required number of hours it should not be problem.

Re: Flex Time

Hi Fran

Sorry, I just noticed this now...

I used to work for a company (a PR agency) that offered Flex Time, and it had it's pros and cons. There were many different options to the entire Flex Time program - some where related to easing the commute for employees (delayed start time or early finish times), some were working from home, and some were designed to prevent people from burning out and being over-worked. I chose an option that allowed me to work 10 hour days for 4 days/week, and then have every other Friday off completely.

If this hadn't been an agency setting, where the clients' needs MUST be put ahead of all else, it probably would have worked out better. However, I found that I was often called at home, on my cell, or expected to check email on the days that I was supposed to be 'off.' To me, this defeats the purpose of offering flex time as a 'benefit.'

If you have the opportunity for a similar arrangement that wouldn't have quite so many 'conditions' I say go for it! It's nice to have some flexibility.

Re: Flex Time

I work on flex time, I guess, but they don't really call it anything. I work 4 days, 35 hrs a week, with mondays off so its 8:30-5:45 most days with a half hour lunch...I leave a little earlier on Wednesdays for school and stay until 6:00 on Fridays. I love having Mondays off!

Re: Flex Time

I don't know if it is exactly flex time but my company...or I should say my department...is pretty flexible regarding the hours we work. If we are in non disaster mode we can come in late and leave early and even work from home if we have no meetings. It makes up for the times we are stuck at work for 2 weeks straight with no going home.

Unless I have a prior commitment such as a doctors appointment I usually work from 8 am to 6ish.

Re: Flex Time

I canonly think of the movie 9-5...they seemed to like it

When DH worked at a 24/7 website...and did the schedule for the site monitors...i helped him create a system for 4 days/week 10 hours per day...they loved it...who wouldn't like 3 days off?? but only the site moniters got this option since they had to be around 24 hours a day...it was a perk

Re: Flex Time

I worked for an organization that had flex-time, I loved it! If I stayed 2 hours late for a meeting I came in 2 hours late or left 2 hours early the next day or so. We just had to use it in the same pay period. ETS: I got flex time for anything over 40 hours.

My last job had 'comp' time which came with a BS policy that you had to work 4 hours above your 8 hours to get it. So in essence you had to work a 12 hour day to get it! If you worked 3 hours.....sorry, NO comp time!

I now work on unofficial comp time which is at my boss' discretion.....sigh......

Re: Flex Time

I am in sales so this is really not an option. I work 40 hours. I wouldn't mind flex time...
