1) Book with orbitz, pay $13 more than delta.com site, but hope that airfare gets reduced and i get $$ back through their 'price assurance' program

did you try kayak.com? they will search all the websites and give you the cheapest price.
IMO, I would just book it. We booked our because since we are traveling on a holiday weekend, almost all flights for July 5 were sold out already! I couldnt believe it! We wanted to wait for Jet Blue but decided to just booke it instead of wait
