Meet with some creative florists, they'll be able to give you ideas and help figure out what you like or don't like.

I highly recommend meeting with John from Flower Michele. He's got great creative ideas and reasonable prices.

You can make decisions with the florist - I wouldn't recommend just leaving it up to them and being surprised on your wedding day.

By meeting with the florists (even if you don't know what you want) you'll get a feel for their style and creativity. You can give them your budget and ask them to put together a package for you and then compare individual prices for specific items and see whose ideas you liked better.

I was the same - I was completely clueless. I met with a florist, and he brought out a couple of flowers, which helped to get the visual.
Once I started looking at what he had, my own creative juices started flowing.

I don't know if you guys know, but are roses (short stem) a fairly inexpensive flowerfor bouquets AND centerpieces? I've heard this and it amazed me, I always thought they were so expensive. Thanks

This is pretty much what I did - just gave my florist a budget and let him go from there. I used Simpson & Co. in Manhattan because I had heard that Ted, the owner, has done work for Martha Stewart's wedding mag. He is very creative and does beautiful work. The way he does weddings is he'll sit down with you, get a feel for what you want, and give you a ballpark figure. My ballpark figure happened to be $4,000, which I thought was pretty high, but I decided to go with him anyway. He didn't outline every detail or how many flowers would be in each arrangement. I was a little worried about this, but it's just not the way he works. After seeing his work on my wedding day, I really do feel like I got my money's worth. He could have skimped on a lot of details that we didn't specifically lay out or even talk about, but he went above and beyond the call of duty. Not only did he do some amazing tall centerpieces, he did 2 big alter arrangements, pew arrangements unlike anything I had ever seen before, and a huge arrangement for the placecard table. And when I came to him asking for extras that were an afterthought (like rose petals to throw and 100+ roses for my cake), he didn't even bat an eye. Anyway, the reason I suggest him is because if you want a florist that will just take over and do something magnificent, he's the type of guy who will. In fact, I tried to have all this input and he wound up taking over anyway because he generally didn't like any of my ideas...which I was actually okay with. I know nothing about flowers so I was fine with leaving it up to him in the end.

Make a list of ALL your floral needs before meeting with anyone. Include pew bows/bouquets, ceremony decorations, BM bouquets, bots, estimate of how many centerpieces you will need etc...
Then start looking at photos. Go to the library or Borders. Look at the Vera Wang bridal books, Collin ? weddings etc..all in the bridal section. Make photocopies of flower ideas you like.
Bring a photo or image of your gown and the BM dresses with you.
Do you like the long cascasde styles or the hand-tied ones? Do you like high centerpeices or low ones. Candles or no candles?
Met with 3 florists to hear their ideas. That should help you make some decisions.
