Flower Girl Etiquette

Flower Girl Etiquette

OK, so I'm having a little bit of an issue with possibly having a flower girl. FH has a cousin who will be 3 1/2 at the time of the wedding, and she's the youngest girl in the family, so would clearly be the choice for the flower girl if we end up having one. We're going to end up having a decent amount of children at the wedding, pretty much to my chagrin, but it's all on FH's side, and FH's family is helping with majority of the reception cost, so I really can't say or do much about it. Before we knew we were going to be able to do the Sat night, the big bone of contention was that FH wanted to do the early starts on either Friday or Sunday to accomodate the children, specifically the potential FG, even though it would mean that I wouldn't get the room that I had wanted.

So when we first got engaged, the mother of the girl had made a comment like oh I better start getting my babysitters in line, which was curious. We just saw them again at a party last week, for the first time since we actually set the date. She once again said something along the lines of great, I have over a year to get a baby sitter. So I kind of was like that's wonderful, here we were almost going to revolve the entire wedding around a 3 year old, and the mother never had the slightest intention to bring her!

So that brings me to the dilemma. Do we ask her to be the flower girl now, even though it appears the mother never intended to even bring her? Like, I don't want to inconvenience the mother or father by having them feel obligated to bring her now as the flower girl if they wanted a night out by themselves. On the other hand, she could have also been fishing to see if we were going to have children at all, but she doesn't seem like the type that would do that. It was going to be a pretty much game time decision anyways, because she's maybe a little under-mature for her age currently, is toddling around, but not really speaking yet. I wanted to wait until maybe 6 months prior to see where her motor skills were at in case she wouldn't be ready yet to take directions. But now I feel if we ask her, we'll be putting the parents out. What would you all do in this situation?

Not sure if this helps, but years ago I was the FG in my aunt's wedding. My brother and I were not, however, brought to the reception. We were too young and parents thought we were better to stay back from that night and let them enjoy it as adults. Perhaps that's what she's thinking of doing? Seems like a good compromise...

I think you should just talk to the parents and say that you were thinking of asking her, but wanted to make sure it wouldn't be too much for them (expenses, having to bring her to the wedding, etc.). That would give them the option to say yes or no, and it would put the issue in their hands rather than yours.

you can always just have the FG at the ceremony and not the reception. that's what i'm doing with my FG and RB. the FG will be 5, so she might come to the CH, but RB will only be 2...

alot of parents who have their kids in the bp, bring them to ceremony but then have someone take them home and watch them for the reception. Even when kids were allowed at the reception. Dh's mom used to always do it with him whenever he was a RB and i know other parents who do the same.

Also, ill say that you shouldn't revolve the time of your wedding around 1 child or a few children. Pick the time you want most.

ask the mother straight out. Some parents like to have a night to themselves, sounds like she feels the same way. So just say to her that you remember her saying she has to hire a babysitter, and say you wanted to ask her daughter to be the FG, and if she wants a night to herself you understand that but if she would mind her daughter attending the ceremony to be your FG. I am sure she will just tell you straight out how she feels, and probably would love to and would have no problem taking her to a relative or close friend after the ceremony to watch her while the parents go to the reception alone

I would casually bring it up to her.... if she shoots it down automatically then i wouldn't ask...

but anyway i wouldn't have anyone be revolving around my wedding but me !!

I agree to most of the posts...talk to the parents before saying anything to the potential FG...

If your FH wanted her to be the flower girl then i would just invite her and if her mother wants to say no, that is her business.

My FH's niece is going to be two for our wedding and I think that is two young but since its super important to him for her to be the FG I totally agreed to it and I dont think his sis is getting a babysitter although she puts her to sleep super early, so I dont know what they are going to do about it honestly.

I would talk to the parents and see how they feel. JMO but I dont feel a saturday night wedding is a place for a 3 year old and it seems the parents were kinda looking for a night out with their child.

Thanks for all the opinions girls!

I think we're going to take the wait and see approach, we have the time. I'm not thrilled about the child situation, I'm kind of hoping that most families will follow suit and rsvp without the children. But like I said, they're paying a good chunk of the RH, so I can't say diddly.
